Lumpia is known as such a popular street hawker food in Semarang that it is often sought by
visitors of Semarang as a food gift or souvenir. This snack is made of thin crepe pastry skin or
lumpia wrapper filled with variants of chopped vegetables like carrots, cabbages, green beans,
bamboo shoot and leeks. To make a special taste, minced meat like chicken, shrimp, or beef is
also added here. Served with brown sauce and cucumber shallot pickle, Lumpia Semarang’s
taste is so yummy that it can spoil one’s tongue who eats it. As a matter of fact, we know that
bamboo shoot used as one of the main materials smells so nasty that many people don’t like to
consume it. Such a nasty smell, however, is not found at all in Lumpia Semarang. To kick the
stink away, bamboo shoot is boiled in water with a small amount of sugar.
