(15 marks) (b) Brown rice is whole grain rice which is more nutritious than white rice, but in Malaysia most people prefer to eat white rice. The main differences between the two forms of rice lie in processing and nutritional content. The block diagram of the process to produce white rice is as in Figure 1. (Dehusking 4 a" Figure 1. Block diagram of process to produce white rice. When only the outermost layer of a grain of rice (ie the husk) is removed, brown rice is produced. To produce white rice, the next layers underneath the husk (ie the bran layer and the germ) are removed, leaving mostly the starchy endosperm. Several vitamins, dietary minerals and as well the oil in the bran, are lost in this removal of the bran layer and the germ, and the subsequent polishing process. In many Malaysian rice mills, the removed bran layer and the germ are discarded as waste. As part of its expansion strategy, your company partnered a 10-ton/h, 6000h/yr Padi Miller Company to set up a new joint-venture company to go into products based on the rice bran layer and germ. Your task is to conduct a hierarchical conceptual process design to produce rice bran oil as the model product from the waste. Rice bran obtained during milling is 10% whw of padi milled. The rice milling company charges RM1000 per ton of rice bran waste. The bran contains 30% wiw oil. 97% wiw of rice bran oil is extracted by solvent extraction using hexane. The hexane is fully recovered and is re-used. The capital cost of equipments for the solvent extraction plant of capacity to process all the rice bran waste is RMSO million Rice bran oil is sold at RM15 per Kg. Outline how you will accomplish your tasks.
