Problem Solving

My Measles: Infectious Disease PowerPoint was completed in the first semester of my

9th grade in a science class. We were asked to describe what the disease was, how it can be

cured, prevented, the effects it has, the effects to the community, the treatment for it, and a

children’s book to explain it in a more simple way. Since measles does not have a cure, we

researched the caution people can take in order to prevent it. In addition, my group was asked

to create a book made especially for toddlers and children. The purpose of the book was to

provide the same important information in a way they will understand. This way, they will be

able to take precautions, too. This IDP fits the problem solving category because we thoroughly

explained the prevention for measles since there is no treatment for it. To be able to find the

prevention for it, we had to read all about the topic to know it well. In this case, it made it

possible for us to come up with plenty of precautions to prevent Measles. Teaching the

precautions people can take can lower the amount of people that actually get the disease.

My Teen Suicide Powerpoint was completed in Ms. Munoz’ classroom, the second

semester of my 9th grade year. We were asked to talk about a frequent problem that happens

mostly among teenagers. We included resources teens can go to if they need help. This IDP

fits the problem solving category because we analyzed a common problem in our community,

and my group and I came up with a solution that may decrease the percentage of teen suicide

that happens in our own community.

The SLO I met while completing both of my IDPs was willing collaborator. While my

team and I worked together, I was a willing collaborator by providing a structure of instructions

for my group to complete our IDP. I also stepped up to explain every detail necessary to my

group mates in order to successfully understand the assignment. For us to understand what our

topic was about, I also worked with my team to do research and distinguish which information

was credible or not.

Between the two IDPs’, three areas of growth that I saw within myself was that I was

able to present without fear. I knew how to make eye contact and how to speak loudly enough

for the panel to hear me. Also, I improved in the way I structured my slides. I used to put at

least a paragraph amount in each slide. Now, I know how to put bullets summarizing what I

will explain. Finally, I also improved in the amount of time it took me to present. Before, I let

my nerves take over me, so at first, I finished in 30 seconds for each slide. However, in the

second PowerPoint, I knew how to explain the information thoroughly and effectively.

Although these are great improvements in myself, I still need to improve on how long I take to

research the information I seek. This is important because it determines the quality of my work.

Since I learned how to use my communication skills through the journey of all my IDP’s, I can

use the skill in the future as a student in the medical field. The reason for this is because

communication is an important part of the jobs that take place in the medical field because you

work with other doctors and families, and it is important to be clear with what you’re trying to

disclose. If any mistakes are made, you can worry someone for no reason or even get fired.
