of each person.
The Opening Ceremony was held formally with the Opening speech from Doctor Nguyen Duc
Thanh – representative from the legal patron of VYF 2010.
Following the Opening Ceremony was a speech from Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thao – Head
representative of The Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF), on the topic of the need
of Changes from Youths and keys to be successful in life. The speech helped address the theme
of this year’s Forum. After that, there was Q&A session for the participants to raise questions for
Ms. Thao and gain deeper understanding of her speech.
The second activity was a round-table discussion on “The Changes of Youths”, in continuation of
the spirit of Ms. Thao’s speech. Participants had opportunities to share their perspectives on
personal changes. They all then agreed on the importance of personal changes in the process of
creating greater social changes. The second topic of the discussion was about facing failures –
something that any youths could experience on their path to ultimate success. Participants shared
their stories of failures openly. They all showed positive view and ready to face failures.

The group activity “Portrait of a Vietnamese youth” helped participants to express their views on
their own generation of Vietnamese. The last activity of the morning was a short speech on the

religions, communication culture, cuisines, arts
and festivals.

The speech from Ms. Nguyen Nga once again

wrapped up the definition of culture and related
areas. After that, she focused in the strengths and
challenges facing Vietnamese culture. She also
introduced participants to happening cultural
projects, for example: preserving ancient

Another activity that helped participants to approach culture was “Cultural Sketches”. Five
random groups were given five topics: communication culture, reading, religion, cultural conflict
and traditional villages. Even with a short time for preparation, every group astonished its

the participants’ top concerns.

In the next group activity, participants were divided into three groups to discuss three elements: the
society, the school administration and faculty, and the self. Each group delineated the role each
element plays in forming the academic environment of students. This activity helped participants
understand in depth the influences of each element and realize the responsibility of students in the

answered the question: “After improving one’s own academic environment, how to expand the
improvement to the whole school?” Listening to Minh sharing her motivations, goals, and
difficulties in carrying out the program, many participants came up with their own ideas of
projects that can better their own schools’ academic environments.
The day ended with a field trip to Huong Canh traditional ceremics village in Vinh Phuc. This

The forth activity started approaching the main theme of Economy Day: domestic – imported

participants were forced to think deeper and critically to
reason and prove their points. Therefore, they learnt to

In the sixth activity, participants changed their role – they became the competitors of the

Basing on previous analysis, the groups came up with creative strategies to improve their
advantages and weaken their competitors at their setbacks. Some groups even came up with

IV. Outcome of VYF 2010:

Continuing the spirit of VYF 2008 and 2009, VYF 2010 has succeeded in achieving our
goals, creating a unique learning environment for Vietnamese youth where they can meet,
exchange knowledge and learn from each other. Together, they have built projects that will
generate positive changes for the society. The program has received positive comments from
the participants, the guest speakers and other specialists. One of our great accomplishments is
that the participants have realized the value of individual changes in creating bigger changes
for the society.

- The forum has provided the participants with the basic knowledge, the latest

biodiversity and climate change; competition between domestic and imported goods
in the Vietnamese economy… Nevertheless, this is just the inspiration and motivation
for the participants to carry on their research in these issues.

- The guest speakers are erudite, have had great accomplishments in their respective
fields and really care for Vietnamese youth. They have passed on their enthusiasm to
the participants. Moreover, the participants can receive knowledge, inspiration as well
as the courage to transform their ideas into real actions in the future.

- The participants have also sharpened the crucial skills needed for an active young
person – the necessary tool that they would use a lot while working with their
projects.

- The forum has also narrowed down the information gap by providing the information
and opportunities offered by different organizations, social activists to the
participants: Live&Learn organization, YESE social entrepreneurship, Festival “The
memoir of Long Bien bridge” project, Global Changemakers…

- 40 young people from all over the countries have had the chance to connect with each
other. After 5 days working together, a new family has been formed, ready to share
the thoughts, the ideas. As one, they can create many social projecs that will bring
positive changes to Vietnam.

V. Networks:

Connecting:

Many former members of the Organzing Committee have been invited to take part in the
program as guest speakers. This not only helps the participants to see the real outcome of
VYF but also brings different generations of VYF closer. Some of the guests are Ms. Le
Thuy Dung and Ms. Nguyen Hong Cam (VYF 2009, project leaders of project 350 in Ho Chi
Minh city and Hanoi); Ms. Nguyen Vu Hanh Dung and Ms. Nguyen Minh Ngoc (founders of
VYF).

Right after VYF 2010, a 3-year reunion of Vietnam Youth Forum happened in the evening of
July 22nd, 2010 with the participation of more that 70 members of VYF and people that have

VYProjects 2010:

During the five days, the participants of VYF 2010 have constructed five ideas to become
VYProjects after the forum.

1.TEDx Vietnam:

The project aims at publicizing useful and unique ideas to the community through the
orgazation of free talks and presentations. The ideas will then receive more support, be
strengthened and brought to reality with actions, contributing to the development of the
community. The first TEDx is planned to happen in Hanoi.

2. Youth Forum in the Central Highlands 2011:

The project aims at creating the model of Vietnam Youth Forum in the Central Highlands to
fulfill the needs of local young people. This will be a leading model in the Central Highlands
– a program for young people organized by young people to help the youth in the Central
Highlands to communicate and together contribute to the society.

3. “My Vienam”:

The project corporate with museums, institutions and culture houses to create a program
introducing Vietnamese traditional culture to children through the form of culture classes as
an extracurricular activities.

4. Improving the quality of public WC and Raising awareness on using WC in primary

students

The education project focuses on health issues, aiming at raising the quality of WC in
primary schools, starting in Ho Chi Minh city, besides education for pupils on how to use the
WC properly.

5. “Sharinglife”:

The project creates for the street children currently attending Mai am tinh thuong 19-5, with
the aim of creating a good educational environment, guaranteeing that they will receive the
most basic knowledge and skills needed in life. Moreover, the volunteers will have the
opportunity to gain more life experiences and practice their educational skills.

VI. Areas for Improvements:

Although VYF 2010 has accomplished a lot, there are still a lot of rooms for improvement,
change and development.

Organization:

- The members of the Organizing Committee were working too independently that
made it really difficult to capture the whole picture of works. They still lack some
skills and experiences that needed to react with very high demands from the
participants.

- Advertisements didn’t cover many means of communications thus the influence was
not significant. Fund-raising works were still small and not professional.

- The selection process for participants needs further consideration, creating clear
criteria, selecting young people that are potential for the post-forum activities as well
20

as the general development of VYF.

- Some chosen topics were abstract, lack of concrete information that is needed in such
a short time of VYF, for example: cultural issues. Some contents were stuck, without
generating any new ideas and did not follow the plan (educational issues). The
connection between days was missing.

- Long agenda from morning to eveing made participants exhausted.

- Some activities were repetitive, boring and lack of creativity.

- The agenda should be fixed two weeks before VYF in order to provide the organizing
committee to have a careful runthrough, planning solutions for possible situations.

- The format and venue of VYF was inappropriate with the spirit of the youth. Some
decisions were unnecessary and created negative effects.

Logistics:

- Logistics took too much time and efforts from the Organizing Committee that led to
lower quality of other areas.
