Product Design process

AKI is dynamic organization constantly working for enhancing the quality of

its products and efficiency in their production. Every business around the globe
operates to earn the profit by selling their products or services. The quality of
product or service offered by them is directly proportional to their success.
Thus, companies undertake extensive research and development work when
they introduce any new offering in the market. AKI hired three (3) designing
engineer, they are directly connected with the production director.

R&D department of the company properly working and striving to introduce

new product design for the purpose of attracting new customer from the market
as well as maintaining existing customer by increasing their satisfaction level.
After complete analysis of market and other external factors which force the company for innovation of its
products, R&D department generate new ideas and these ideas shares with the designing personals for
practically implementation on workplace. On the instructions of R&D the designer create new design by using
latest version of CAD, Corel Draw and Adobe Photoshop. When the design approved by the production director
they create printing frames/dai for implementing new design.

Quality management system (QMS)

The company remains in the hunt of latest technology and engaged in

research and development to produce best quality footballs. The first
important milestone was reached in 1966, when company developed pre-
stretched leather balls and became the first manufacturer of pre-stretched
leather balls in Pakistan. The company developed its own brand “Double
Star which was approved by FIFA in 1967 and was the first FIFA
approved ball from Pakistan. Double Star remained a symbol of quality for
decades. It all because of production department is much more conscious
about quality of products. We found there a strong sequence of quality
management system each stage of production area have a separate supervisor (cutting, lapping, panel cutting,
printing, stitching, and at final stage packing supervisor) the duty of these personal is to ensure quality of
material at each stage. For best quality management system (QMS) they use a specific quality approving slip
which is issued from store room and passes each stage of production area till packing stage. The purpose of this
slip is to verify the quality of material by the supervisors. Production schedule is made, Raw material is turned
into finished goods, Quality of goods is described and maintained, Ensuring quality is achieved at the end in
each item produced.
At any stage of production the supervisor found material defective, he returned back material with this slip by
mentioning the problem he found in it to previous responsible person. They continually adopting new material,
techniques, and new technology for producing best quality leather balls, they never ever compromise on a little
problem in material, because the top management of the company teach and give weekly instruction to all
supervisors for producing best quality products. They also motivate and encourage employees by offering the
different policies such as, increment, Boones, monthly leaves, health cards etc. They think that by offering these
types of incentives the worker remains motivated and struggle to produce best quality products.

Our Social Responsibility

The SAHEP program was launched in 1996 with partnership of select sports
which is leading by Anita Khawaja to motivate their stitchers by providing them
all basic facilities. SAHEP is an exemplary project among the football workers
in the Sialkot region. The success of this program is so eminent that it should be
emulated by other industries of the region. The program is designed to ensure
that children of their stitchers attend school rather than become worker. It also
provides health cover to the stitchers and their families. Special assistance to
deserving families and gifts of food items for EID is other features. Because of
these best policies the quality of footballs increase as compare to competitors
and the company capable to capture to best ranking brand in the world (Select
sports & DERBYSTAR).
ISO certification
The standard is designed to help companies at many levels, including a focus on
customer requirements, improving leadership within the company, finding ways to
continually improve. ISO 9000 was first published in 1987 by the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO), a specialized international agency for
standardization composed of the national standards bodies of more than 160
countries. AKI present installed capacity in term of production area facilities and
labor force is approximately 10,000 balls per day. ISO 9000 Certification, The
company quality system is certified by DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV)
Netherlands in conformance with ISO 9000 quality standard since 1999. Social
Compliance Certification the Company is certified by Fair trade Labeling Organization
(FLO) for its social compliance standards.

Recommendations/Suggestions

AKI striving for continually improving quality of sports goods according to the needs
and demands of its customer and compete the market. For this purpose they have
special teaching rooms and white boards to keep In touch their supervisors and
operational managers with current challenges as well as opportunities and threats. We
also take a formal class and teach them how they can improve quality management
system (QMS) and increase their productivity. We teach them the theory of best
known quality expert W. Edward Deming (the father of total quality management)
for improve quality, productivity, and competitive position. We also suggest them to
use Juran Trilogy (Planning, Control, and Improvement) for managing quality of footballs and raw
material. We also suggest them,

 You should keep connected with workers through meetings for eliminating any ambiguity.
 The environment of workplace should be clean and healthy.
 Eliminate the element of favoritism and should be a proper system to eliminate the dispute and any other
ethical issues.
 You should hired experts for external analysis of opportunities and threats.
 There should by performance appraisal and reward system for employees to increase output.
 Study and follow the total quality management gurus for better results and enhancing quality
productivity.
Conclusion
The educational visit to AKI Industries and the research conducted via other
sources conclude that the company has a very efficient and productive quality
management system. Research shows that the system in place enables AKI to
measure all parts of the production process with large success. The effectiveness
of this system allows for the organization to profit by creating various distribution
centers all over the world, applying the same quality principles. Without this
quality system in place, AKI may have found it tougher to penetrate international
locations. Through this study we consider that the management of the company
does not compromise on the quality of the product. Therefore they pay more attention on the product design and
quality of raw material. There is something wrong we realized at the workplace such as environment is not
healthy, worker couldn’t directly share their problems on workplace with top management.

Strengthens:

 The staff in Production department of AKI is extremely qualified personal so decision making
process is highly effective.
 They have proper sources for getting knowledge from outside.
 To increase their efficiency they prefer new entrants of the market.
Weakness:

 There are most ethical issues.

 The employees are not too much participative each other.
