INVERTEBRATES

- Animals without backbones.

- 96 % animal species on earth are invertebrates.

TYPES OF INVERTEBRATES

1. Sponges
- Are the simplest multicellular animal.
- They live almost exclusively in salt water, they vary in color.
- The body of sponges consist of tiny pores. The small incurrent pores and the large
excurrent pores.
- They have the ability to replace lost body parts or to repair damaged parts, the process
is known as regeneration.

2. Cnidarians – formely called coelenterates. They are aquatic animals with soft bodies shaped like a
vase, bell or an umbrella.

3. Mollusks – have a soft body that is covered by an outer layer called mantle. Many mollusk love inside
a shell, but not all of them.

4. Crustaceans – area type of anthropod, meaning they have jointed legs. They also have exoskeleton
(bones are on the outside shell)

5. Worms – not a scientific word but is often used to refer to invertebrate animals that do not have legs.
They may live in soil, in water or even inside other animals as parasites.

6. Insects – Are part of the earths largest animal phylum, the anthropods. There are over one million
species of insects.

7. Spiders, Centipedes, & Scorpions - The spiders and scorpions are arachnids because they have eight
legs, while the centipedes and millipedes are myriapods because they have lots of legs.
