I. TITLE

IMPROVING CHARACTER BASED SPEAKING BY APPLYING

THINK PAIR SHARE METHOD OF THE TENTH YEAR

STUDENTS OF SMK MUHAMMADIYAH 2 KLATEN IN

ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2019/2020

II. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Hornby (2005: 1467) In Khotimah (2014: 51) states that “Speaking is

used to show that what you are saying is true in general, to convey the ideas,

and to have a conversation with somebody about something.”. The crucial

thing in speaking is how to deliver the ideas well and make the listener

understand of what the speaker says. The students can also increase their

knowledge and self confidence if they can communicate with foreigners in

English well.

Speaking is one of the important skill in English that must be learnt by

students in language learning. The students who are capable in speaking

means that they are able to share their ideas and opinions to listeners

through speaking.

Bailey (2003:48) in Roswati et al (2014) says that “speaking is a

process of producing verbal utterance which is done to deliver meaning.

During the learning process, learners need to communicate with others in

order to express their ideas and feelings. One of the ways to communicate

with other is through speaking. Speaking has the most important role in the

success of communication.

In language teaching, speaking skill is the important skill of English

language skills. Retnowati and Ngadiso (2018: 164) state that “Speaking has

become an important skill in learning English as foreign language. The

importance of speaking is shown by the function in the comunnication”.

In teaching speaking, teachers teach more complicated way how to

produce word to become a sentence and how to respond another speakers.

Learners should be able to make themselves understood, using their current

proficiency to the fullest. They should try to avoid confusion in the message

due to faulty pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, and to observe the

social and cultural rules that apply in each communication situation.

In the speaking class, the students should be taught how to speak.

However, teaching speaking is not an easy job. In fact, the students have

many problems dealing with English. According to Brown (2001: 270),

there are some features that makes speaking as difficult language skill. They

cover clustering, redundancy, reduced form, performance variables,

colloquial language, rate of delivery, stress, rhtym, intonation of English

and interaction.

Many students who learn English think that there are some problems

faced when they give it a try to speak in English. The first is that they find

difficulty to express their ideas. The second is that their pronunciation and

grammar are weak. Then, the other problem deals with the vocabulary

items. Those kinds of condition also happened among the tenth year

students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten

By having the problems above, there must be a suitable technique for

teaching speaking that can increase their oral skill. Having a good ability in

speaking is not a simple thing. To help students achieve a good ability in

speaking requires the use of appropriate strategies. The effective technique

in teaching speaking will help the students in their speaking activity and

solve their problem in speaking. The writer choses Think-pair-share to help

students in their speaking especially in expressing suggestion and opinion.

Usman (2015: 39) states The think-pair-share strategy is a strategy designed

to provide students to think a given topic by enabling them to formulate

individual ideas and share these ideas with another student.. This strategy is

an effective way to change learning circumstance in the classroom. It gives

more time to the students to think, to respond, and to help each other.

By using think pair share, the students can share their ideas that

appear in their minds as the responses to the lecturer’ questions in the

teaching and learning process. Students then turn to a partner and share their

responses with others. During the third step, student’s responses can be

shared within a four-person learning team, within a larger group, or with an

entire class during a follow-up discussion. The caliber discussion is

enhanced by this technique, and all students have an opportunity to learn by

reflection and by verbalization (Jones, 2006) in Usman (2015: 39)

Nowdays, the purpose teaching and learning is also to evaluate moral

and character education. Through think pair share method, the student

identified the need for character education. This method aims to introduce

the importance of positive social manners and moral education.

Based on Peraturan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Nomor 21

Tahun 2016 Tentang Standar Isi Pendidikan Dasar Dan Menengah “Tingkat

Kompetensi dan ruang lingkup materi diterapkan untuk setiap muatan

sebagaimana diatur dalam Pasal 77I ayat (1), Pasal 77C ayat (1), dan Pasal

77K ayat (2), ayat (4) dan ayat (5) Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 32 Tahun

2013 Tentang Perubahan atas Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 19 Tahun 2005

Tentang Standar Nasional Pendidikan” states that the character which are

expected from the students after learning English, some of them are honest,

discipline, responsible, etc. so, the teacher hopes that the students are able to

implement good character on learning English.

Based on the explanation above the writer conduct a research entitled

“Improving Character Based Speaking by think pair share (TPS)

Method of the Tenth Year Students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten

in academic year of 2019/2020”

III. THE LIMITATION OF THE STUDY


In order to make the problem in this study clear, the writer wants to clarify
them by limiting the study. Related to the background above, the limitation of
the study is formulated into the following:
“Character based speaking by applying Think Pair Share method of the
tenth year students SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in academic year of
2019/2020..
IV. THE PROBLEM OF THE STUDY
In this research, the writer formulates the statement of the problem as
follow:
“Can Think Pair Share method improve the character based speaking skill
of the tenth year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in academic year
of 2019/2020..
V. THE AIM OF THE STUDY
In conducting the research, the writer should have the certain aim of the
research. The aims of the study are as follow:
To verify whether applying Think Pair Share method can be used to improve
the caharacter based speaking skill of the tenth year students of SMK
Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in academic year of 2019/2020.
VI. THE USE OF THE STUDY
The writer hopes that the result of the study can be uselful both
theoritically and practically as follows:
1. The Theoritical Use
It can be used to enrich the repertoire of character based teaching and
learning speaking theory.
2. The Practical Use
It can be used as a teaching model for other schools.

VII. THE CLARIFICATION OF THE KEY TERMS


The key terms used in the title of this study can be explained as follows:
A. Improving

According to Hornby (1987: 427), improving is making or becoming


better. It means improving is the condition of something that is better made. In
this study, improving means to make the student’s speaking skill become
betterl with the process of teaching and learning by applying Think Pair Share
method.
In this study, improving means making the teaching and learning process,
especially on teaching and learning speaking of the tenth year student SMK
Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in academic year of 2019/2020. become better, from
being unconfident to speak in English become being confident to speak in
English and pronounce words and sentences correctly by applying Think Pair
Share method.
B. Character Based Speaking

Speaking is the way of oral communication. Speaking skill is ability to
communication by oral. English speaking ability can help people to have
meaningful and communicative conversation in English. In this study, speaking
means how to express and use of words or language to express oneself in an
ordinary voice of the tenth year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in
academic year of 2019/2020.
C. Think Pair Share
Usman (2015: 39) states The think-pair-share strategy is a strategy
designed to provide students to think a given topic by enabling them to
formulate individual ideas and share these ideas with another student.. This
strategy is an effective way to change learning circumstance in the classroom.
It gives more time to the students to think, to respond, and to help each other.

In this study, Think Pair Share is a strategy used by the English teacher of
tenth year student of Smk Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in academic year of
2019/2020.
D. Character Education
According to Agboola and Tsai (2012: 164), character education is a
growing discipline with the deliberate attempt to optimize students’ ethical
behavior. The outcome of character education has always been encouraging,
solidly, and continually preparing the leader of tomorrow.
In this study, character education is a teaching method which fosters the
development of ethical and responsible individuals by teaching tenth year
students of Smk Muhammadiyah 2 Klaten in academic year of 2019/2020
about the good values that people should have like caring about other people,
honestly and responsibility.

VIII. THE ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY


It is important to present the organization of the thesis in order to be easily
understood. In this research divides the content of this organization of the
study into five chapters as follows:
Chapter I is introduction. It consist of the background of the study, the
limitation of the study, the problem of the study, the aim of the study, the use
of the study, the clarification of the key terms, and the organization of the
study.
Chapter II is the review of related literature. It consist of speaking skill,
teaching speaking, think pair share, and character education.
Chapter III is the method of the study. It consist of the meaning of
research method, the subject of the study, the research setting, the technique of
collecting the data, and the technique of analyzing the data.
Chapter IV is the result of the study. It consist of the data analysis, and the
discussion of the research findings.
Chapter V deals with the conclusion and suggestion.
