Suspense

a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen

Suspense is created many time throughout the play to build tension and to
move the plot forward. For example, Iago stating that he wants to kill Othello
builds suspense because it gets the audience to wonder how this is going to
happen. Also when Iago's plan starts working, a lot of suspense is built up
and we wonder if Othello will have the strength to not give into jealousy.

Tone
attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience
The tone in this piece is evil. There are many references to the devil when
Iago is brought up. We can observe the gradual decline in Othello's strength
as he starts to believe in Iago and internalize hatred for Desdemona. Othello
starts as a stately, intelligent, and kind general and husband, but soon
decays into an angry, emotional, and hateful person. This change is
reflected in the tone.

Situational Irony
when incongruity appears between expectations of something to happen,
and what actually happens instead
Situational Irony is used mostly to allow for Iago's plan to work. For
example, we would expect that Othello would be strong enough to not allow
Iago to manipulate him, but he does. Love is destroyed by man even though
it rarely is in most literature.

Motif
recurrent image, idea, or symbol that develops or explains a theme, while a
theme is a central idea or message
A motif that appears in Othello is the comparison of Iago to the devil. Iago
convinces Othello to disobey God's will and tempts him to murder his wife.
This is similar to the devil in genesis who tempts Adam and Eve to bite the
apple in the garden of Eden.

Recognition
startling discovery that produces a change from ignorance to knowledge
Recognition is a moment in a tragedy where the main character recognizes
or identifies his/her true nature, recognizes the other character's true
identity, and discovers the true nature of their situation. One example of
recognition in the play is when Emilia realizes what Iago has been doing and
reveals that he has been the one behind all the chaos between Othello and
Desdemona.

Reversal
appears to be one thing, or going on way, and changes on a dime so that
there's a perspective shift and the reader (and characters) see that thing
differently
Reversal is a sudden change in a story where the protagonist's fortune goes
from good to bad. One example of reversal in the play is when Othello stabs
Iago after finding out about his evil scheme and sentenced him to torture and
life in prison.

Mood
that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and
descriptions
The mood of this piece is one of anger and sadness. Othello has everything
he could’ve ever wanted. He was a general of the army and married to
someone he truly loves. However, he allows Iago to take control of him and
destroy everything he has.
