Creating our Version of the Desert Hot Springs High School Logo

Introduction

In the beginning of April, our teacher gathered the class to make a special announcement.

It was at that moment where we found out about an opportunity; a chance to help recreate the

Desert Hot Springs High School logo. As we continued into this project, our teacher assigned 4

leaders to represent each group. Our leader, Brisa Andrade, was given the group where they

would do a “facelift” version of the old logo. Our group was finally organized, and immediately,

we gathered up to discuss of our potential logo with that information in mind. Everyday we met

to discuss the specific characteristics of the Eagle that needed to be incorporated into our logo.

Some aspects included the posture of the eagle, the color of the feathers, the “DHS” phrase, and

even small details such as the posture of the beak. We drew these onto pieces of papers, and

criticized each other's thoughts and ideas for this logo. Day after day, new ideas were brought,

and eventually we agreed on how we wanted our logo to identify as, and by the end of a week

and a half, the team split off the begin working on the design. For further information on our path

of creating our logo, the steps of producing such task follows.

Process of Drawing

The process of drawing the logo started off with many ideas through the use of sketches.

Meanwhile we were looking into drawing that represented a strong eagle in order to be scanned

onto the computer. Each team was able to represent and throw their ideas as we all have our

personal opinion upon what was appropriate and what was not necessary. We were assigned to

do a logo face lift-up. Our team tried to keep the eagle to be as close to the old logo, with new

aspects of boldness and strength. Many ideas were thrown out the window as we also kept some

of them, as we also kept thinking of new ways to make it what we believed was the best choice

we incorporated some aspect of some eagles that were not agreed upon such as the mouth and

the eyes. After a few days of researching and drawing plenty of eagles, Our team decided on one

specific logo we all liked and we believed it had a look that would initialize the process of

scanning into a computer. From that point, our team separated to individual tasks to achieve the

overall design.

Integrating into Computer

Once the sketch was on the computer we were able to modify the eagle as we pleased.

For example, we first started by seeing what shades of brown and yellow we were going to use

for the eagle; however, the colors were already decided for us (since we were the group that had

to do the facelift of the eagle). Some other changes that were made was the shape of the whole

eagle itself, and the shape of the eye on the eagle. The eagle went through many stages

throughout the process of creating as we learned from our mistakes. We also opened up to others

for opinions on the eagle and what could be changed to make it the best we can. With the little

time we had we were able to finish our eagle, we prepared to present to the administrators and

for the May Showcase.

Type

For our type we had to do a lot of research on typography in order to get an idea of what

we wanted and how it would look on our design. Then, we played around with many types with

the idea in mind to look for something strong, in hopes to make our logo stand out and have a

meaning. For example, the very first one we used was Spantaran. Although our group had second

thoughts about the typography not matching with our logo and we decided to change the style to

Richardson Brand Accelerator. Overall our team was fully satisfied with the final product.

May Showcase

The day of the Showcase took place on May 16th, 2019 at the Palm Springs Air Museum.

Multiple schools around the valley joined this event, all showcasing their talents, designs,

interests, and so much more. The time of arrival was around 2:30pm, and as soon as we showed

up, we sat up. We placed our stands that held all the logos, the computers along with cables that

connected to power, and tables. After we finished setting up, there was a time gap until the actual

time of the event, which was at 4pm. Everyone prepared mentally and practiced what to say in

the event that someone would ask questions regarding the our logo design. When the actual time

came, the amount of people that showed up to support was incredibly evident. Plenty of people

came around to ask the simplest of questions that truly made us all think of moments when we

began from the very beginning. Some questions asked included the task of the project, why we

chose certain details of the logo, and even questions regarding the reason behind the posture of

the eagle. Throughout this time, we also handed out stickers that would count as a vote for our

group, and at the end of the day, it was announced that our class had won 3rd place from the art

department. Finally, everyone helped to pack and went back home.

Final Conclusion

To conclude, the overall journey of our design was undoubtedly a great learning

experience. This opportunity is unlike what most students would be given in high school. The

process of developing and designing a Corporate Identity Logo is not anything simple, without

mentioning one other factor that made it a little more unique than in most scenarios; teams. This

project did not allow for one person to take total control of the outcome, due to the fact that other

people were present with different opinions and personalities. We expanded our knowledge in

not just the graphic design industry, but in how to complete tasks with people that may not

necessarily have the same mentality or perception of ideas. We managed to get through criticism

from Staff and teachers; despite the erudite and unfiltered comments they may have portrayed

when commenting on our design. These past 2 months of hard work and critical thinking led us

all to understand and comprehend the sincere hardships a day-to-day graphic designer would

encounter. We are regular 16-17 year olds with less than 2 years of experience, but still, this

chance was given, and for that, we will always be recognize it and be grateful.
