Argumentative

The assignment I chose was Into the Wild argumentative essay. This assignment was done

during my senior year in my ERWC. In this assignment, I was asked to argue on how

Christopher McCandless was brave to go into the wild. I had to use valid evidence from the

book in order to prove my point of view on Christopher. This essay is a argumentative because I

had to prove that Christopher McCandless was a brave person to explore the wild without any

hesitation. I had to use evidence from the book in order to support my claim on how Christopher

McCandless was brave. Christopher went into the wild for 100 days and challenged himself to

survive. Christopher McCandless was a courageous when he shared his experience in this quote

from the book, “His gear seemed exceedingly minimal...cheap leather hiking boots were neither

waterproof nor well insulated...His rifle was only .22 caliber....The only navigational aid in his

possession was a tattered state road map he’d scrounged at the gas station” (Page 5).

The SLO I meet was being a critical thinker. The way I was being a critical thinker was

by analyzing as well as supporting my claim by using the book. I had to decide if Christopher

McCandless was ignorant or was he brave to go into the wild. My point of view was that

Christopher McCandless was brave. I use da quote that showed Christopher McCandless was

brave, “Gallien thought the hitchhiker’s scheme was foolhardy and tried to dissuade him…”

followed by Gallien saying, “I said the hunting wasn’t easy where he was going...When that

didn’t work, I tried to scare him with bear stories...Alex didn’t seem too worried” to which Chris

responds,”I’ll climb a tree…” (Page 9). Another way I was critical was I had to proofread my

work in order to publish my essay. I had to revise my rough draft such as my grammar in order

to have a good score on my final draft.

This assignment help develop skills on my SLO’s. I was able to have sufficient evidence

to prove my perspective on Christopher McCandless. Also I was able to practice analyzing

evidence to help me later on in school. Something I still need to prove on is being descriptive

when it comes to explaining my evidence in my own words. The skills I have developed while

doing this assignment will help me in my future such as doing essays in college.

Into The Wild Argumentative Essay

In the book “ Into the wild” by Jon Krakauer we were introduced to main character

named “Christopher Johnson McCandless. Christopher McCandless went to explore the wild and

several other places during his journey. McCandless was a brave person which he went out into

the wild with no hesitation. Christopher was a person who was not afraid to risk it’s life ,

Christopher McCandless like to explore the wild and was one of his mayor goals to do in life.

During McCandless early years he wanted to explore the wildin which always had catch his

attention. Chris showed his courage and bravery through facing difficulties challenges during his

journey, survived more than 100 days in the wild, and ultimately showed us that being near cruel

death, in the end, he felt that he was at peace.

Christopher McCandless was inspiring and a corouges man, because he went into the

wild not knowing what may have happened, and looked into dangers eye and laughed.

McCandless was courageous in the quote, “His gear seemed exceedingly minimal...cheap leather

hiking boots were neither waterproof nor well insulated...His rifle was only .22 caliber....The

only navigational aid in his possession was a tattered state road map he’d scrounged at the gas

station” (Page 5). In this quote, Chris is showing his minimal efforts at taking this challenge

easily, he would go with what he has and make do with it without a problem. Chris also showed

his courage through the quote, “I’ve decided that I’m going to live this life for some time to

come. The freedom and simple beauty of it is just too good to pass up” (Page 92).This quote

means that even with many opportunities at hand, Chris prefers to live in the moment, and truly

admire the peace and freedom he’s being given. Even with very minimal survival tools and

quality, he managed to last a very long time in the dark cold wilderness.
Secondly, Chris proves his shocking inspirational embodiment by lasting more than 100

days in the wild in Alaska, while also easily surviving other trips he made. Over the pages of the

book, we see his travels and experiences but most notably on page 195 where he states,”DAY

100!MADE IT!” surviving the harsh conditions of the alaskan wilderness, he pridefully states in

his journal. In the end, Chris shows that he found a vibrant natural peace near death, and that was

all that mattered. In which serving in wild has its difficulties but yet Christopher Mccandless was

able to be safe in the wild.

Furthermore, he also showed courage by showing us true freedom cannot be found in our

modern technological lives, it can only be found while reflecting on ourselves in our most

painful times and moving forward. It is even said by a friend of the author, Roman, “...But I

admire what he was trying to do. Living completely off the land like that, month after month, is

incredibly difficult...And I’d bet you that very few, if any, of the people who call McCandless

incompetent have ever done it either, not for more than a week or two.” This quote basically

proves that very few people can survive in such conditions, but McCandless did it for months

and found peace in the end, which is a highly ironic event for the pessimists who impose

McCandless. He also quotes “NATURE/PURITY,” at the top page of an entry in his journal,

alongside “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED,” (Page 189) which basically means...

Some people might argue that Chris was idiotic and childish, especially in the quote;

“Alaska has long been a magnet for dreamers and misfits, people who think the unsullied

enormity of the Last Frontier will patch all the holes in their lives. The bush is an unforgiving
place…” (Page 4). But he wasn’t, through the whole book, Chris undeniably states and shows

that he has no regrets, doesn’t plan on turning back, and will not finish until he finds peace. This

is seen especially through chapter one when he talks to Jim Gallien and denies any sort of

assistance from him. The book states, “Gallien thought the hitchhiker’s scheme was foolhardy

and tried to dissuade him…” followed by Gallien saying, “I said the hunting wasn’t easy where

he was going...When that didn’t work, I tried to scare him with bear stories...Alex didn’t seem

too worried” to which Chris responds,”I’ll climb a tree…” (Page 9). This proves that not only

was Chris insisting on not going back, but not even the scariest of stories would hold him back.

In conclusion, Chris never was idiotic or reckless, he was a real hero based on the things

he did. Chris was courageous and inspirational because he faced problems head-on without

giving up, he managed to survive a very long time in the wild with not many supplies or aid kits,

and showed us that we can find peace in nature. Christopher McCandless did face problems

emotionally and socially, but he found refuge in mother nature’s always open arms, however,

they may not always be warm. Even though Chris might be called idiotic, people never put

themselves in McCandless’s shoes, people often misjudge prejudicially and don’t understand the

lesson here, reflecting, thinking, and forgiving can give us a key to peace, and it usually happens

at our hardest times. Indeed Christopher McCandless was brave enough to go into the wilderness

and be capable to survive several days.
