ABSTRACT

Temperature Boiler is one of the most important equipment in any power plants which require
continuous monitoring and inspection at frequent intervals. There are possibilities of errors at
measuring and various stages involved with human workers. So a reliable monitoring system is
necessary to avoid catastrophic failure, which is achieved by Programmable Logic Controller &
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system. boiler automation system using PLC and sensors.
the inputs to the boiler at a required temperature, so as to constantly maintain a particular temperature
in the boiler.

SCADA is used to monitor the boiler temperature, pressure and water level using different sensors
and the corresponding output is given to the PLC which controls the boiler temperature, pressure and
water level. If the temperature and pressure inside the boiler exceeds the predefined value then the
entire system is shut down. In case of emergency different automated check valves are used to release
pressure, steam and inform the concerned authority through alarm.

Systems are used to monitor and control a plant or equipment in industries such as
telecommunications, water and waste control, energy, oil and gas refining and transportation. The
initial phase of the paper focuses on passing the inputs to the boiler at a required temperature, so as to
maintain a particular temperature in the boiler, and shows the temperature/pressure relationship. To
achieve desired steam pressure (2Bar) at certain temperature, the Properties of Steam Table analysis is
done. A proper boiler design and modelling and safety precautions are taken into consideration.
Focusing on level, pressure, temperature parameters are constantly monitored using SCADA screen
which is connected to the PLC.

INTRODUCTION

Temperature control to boiler automates a power plant and minimizes human intervention, there is a
need to develop a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system that monitors the plant
and helps reduce the errors caused by humans.

While the SCADA is used to monitor the system, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is also used
for the internal storage of instruction for the implementing function such as logic, sequencing, timing,
counting and arithmetic to control through digital or analog input/ out put modules various types of
machines processes. Systems are used to monitor and control plant or equipment in industries such as
telecommunications, water and waste control, energy, oil and gas refining and transportation.

Over the years the demand for high quality, greater efficiency and automated machines has increased
in the industrial sector of power plants. Power plants require continuous monitoring and inspection at
frequent intervals. There are possibilities of errors at measuring and various stages involved
with human workers and also the lack of few features of microcontrollers. Thus this paper takes a
sincere attempt to explain the advantages the companies will face by implementing .

It is used to monitor the boiler temperature, pressure and water level using different sensors and the
corresponding output is given to the PLC which controls the boiler temperature, pressure and water
level. If the temperature and pressure inside the boiler exceeds the predefined value then the entire
system is shut down. In case of emergency different automated check valves are used to release
pressure, steam and inform the concerned authority. PLC is also used for the internal storage of
instruction for the implementing function such as logic, sequencing, timing, counting and arithmetic
to control through digital or analog input/ output modules various types of machines processes
automation into them.

. OBJECTIVE

Boiler section: Boiling container, sensors (presssure, temperature & level sensors) & a
heater assemble altogether to give rise to the boiler section.

Controlling section: This section includes the PLC trainer kit which is responsible for data collection
from field sensors, evaluation of collected data & generation of appropriate output signals for
automatic actuation and termination of different peripherals incorporated.

Water supply section: water supply to the boiler is ensured by a water pump whose actuation&
termination is controlled by the PLC trainer.
Power supply section: This takes care of the power requirements for the whole project. This mostly
comprises of the circuits providing DC power for the field sensors and valves (solenoids).

DESCRIPATION

Level sensor: When the water is less than 2 liters then motor will be switched ON. If the
temperature and pressure inside boiler exceeds then entire system will be in OFF state. The
corresponding automated check valves are opened to avoid catastrophic failure.
Pressure sensor: T he MPX10DP ser ies devices ar e differ ential pr essur e silicon
piezor esistive pr essur e sensors providing a highly accurate and linear voltage output, directly
proportional to the applied differential pressure. The sensor is a single, monolithic silicon diaphragm
with the strain gauge thin-film r esistor networ k integrated on-chip. T he chip is laser
tr immed for pr ecise span offset calibration and temper atur e compensation.
Temperature sensor:The LM35 series are precision integrated-circuit temperature sensors, whose
output voltageis linearly proportional to the Celsius (Centigrade) temperature. The LM35 thus has an
advantageover linear temper atur e sensor s calibrated in °Kelvin, as the user is not
r equir ed to subtract a large constant voltage from its output to obtain convenient Centigrade
scaling.

CONCULSION

In this paper, Boiler Automation using PLC . Different sensors are used to measure the temperature,
pressure and water level. PLC used to control the operation. If the temperature and pressure exceed
predefined value then the entire setup will shut down and automatic check valves are opened to
release the steam and pressure. In case of emergency alarm was energized and automatic check
valves are opened to avoid catastrophic failure. The future work deals with the purification of water
to the boiler and the air circulation for the boiler to burn the fuel using same automation technique.
