Personal Insight Question: Timed Writing

Directions: In the space below write a response to the following question. Your response has
a max of 350 words. Try to use as many of these words without going over. Plan and spend
your time wisely. Prewrite before writing and then save time to edit and revise.

“Describe an example of your leadership experience in which

you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or
contributed to group efforts over time.”

Things to consider: As you plan consider how you define “leader”? List three words that you
think describe what a leader is. Do any of these words apply to you? How? Is there a time in
your life when you displayed any of these traits?

What being a leader means to me is taking control of a group and trying

to help them to go the right direction. A time when I have shown
leadership is when I helped out as a camp leader for 6th grade students
from Peggy Heller Elementary School. I had a partner and we led a group
of 18 kids. My partner and I did a great job helping the kids do what they
were supposed to do and work as a team. As a leader, I knew I had to set
my ground and let the kids know that they must respect me and I would
respect them back. What I really wanted to do as a leader was be a great
role model and team player to teach the young kids that you can be cool
and on top of things at the same time. Whenever we did some group
activities, I made sure nobody was left out and nobody did all the work.
Getting the kids to communicate with each other and trying to complete
the same task is what I had my kids do at their camp; and, I know, for
sure, that they had fun and enjoyed me as their cabin leader. So while
helping the kids and being a leader, I learned that being tactful, self
motivated, and confident helps you complete the task and spread the
positivity.
