HEAVY SOIL COMPACTING

EQUIPMENTS

TYPES OF ROLLERS
Depending upon the project requirement and soil condition which has to
be compacted, different types of rollers are used for compaction work
and they are as follows:
• Cylindrical Roller
• Sheepsfoot Roller
• Pneumatic Roller
• Smooth Wheeled Roller
• Vibratory Roller
• Grid Roller
CYLINDRICAL ROLLER

• It is a light roller made of iron, concrete,

stone.
• It is generally drawn by hand or bullocks
• Its dimensions are about 1-1.2metre in
diameter and 1.5metre long.
• This type of roller generates a pressure
about 7kg/cm2.
SHEEPSFOOT ROLLER
• The name only indicates i.e., a type of roller
which consists a drum having a round or
rectangular shaped “protrusion” or feet on
it.
• These are known as tamping rollers.
• Commonly used is two drum type of
1.3metre wide.

• Area of each protrusion can vary from 30 to 80cm2 and it covers

a area about 8-12%.
• Generally 10-20 passes are required to give complete coverage.
PNEUMATIC TYRED ROLLER
• This type of roller consists of a heavily
loaded wagon with several rows of four
to six closely spaced tyres, thus called as
rubber tyred roller.
• The two factors governing the amount of
compaction: type pressure; area of
contact.

• It provides a 7kg/cm2 of uniform pressure throughout the width.

• This covers 80% of compacting area.
• To achieve maximum density 8 passes are required with optimum speed
of varying between 6-24km/h.
SMOOTH WHEELED ROLLER
• It consists of large steel drum in front and one or two on rear end
depending upon the number of wheels on the rear, it can be of
following two types:

Tandem rollers(having one wheel Three wheeled roller(having two

at rear and one wheel in front) wheel at rear and one in front)
Contd.,
• The weight of tandem roller varies from 2-8tonnes and that of three
wheeled roller varies from 8-10tonnes.
• It provides 100% smooth coverage area.
• Increasing weight of roller by addition of water or wet sand so called
as ballasting.
• It provides a 10-17kg/cm2 of uniform pressure throughout the width.
• To achieve maximum density 8 passes are required with optimum
speed of varying between 3-6km/h.
• The maximum grade a road roller can climb is 1 in 5.
VIBRATORY ROLLER
• It is fitted with one or two smooth surfaced
wheels of 0.9-1.5metre in diameter and 1.2-
1.8metre wide.
• These are self propelled rollers weighing
around 4-6tonnes.
• Vibration created by an rotation of eccentric
shaft.
• Generally used for compacting GSB layers
and even asphaltic concrete works sometimes.
GRID ROLLER
• These have cylindrical heavy steel surface
which consist of a network forming steel
bars in a form of grid with square holes.
• They are generally towed units and can
operate at speed of 5-24km/h.
• The weight of rollers varies between
5tonnes and 15tonnes if ballast is present.

• These rollers provide high contact pressure and useful for

compacting most coarse grained soils.
