How to Fix or Reset the NI

MAX Database File
Updated May 10, 2019

Reported In

Software
 Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)

Driver
 NI-DAQmx
 NI-488.2

Issue Details
 DAQmx has slowed down either after updating or reinstalling. How can I potentially fix
this issue?
 When I open NI MAX, I get the following error message "The database file is
corrupt. Refer to KnowledgeBase article 4GA9TOQA for information
about how to fix or restore the database file."
 NI MAX is throwing the error message "The MAX database exited abnormally.
Visit ni.com/info and enter the info code
MAXTerminatedServiceError if the problem persists. Go to ni.com
now?"
 I get "Error -229771: Internal Software Error occurred in MIG
software." when exporting the NI MAX Configuration Database.
 NI MAX takes too much time to open, usually over 5 minutes, and I see a message that
displays "There was a problem updating settings for this device" when
I select My System. The software is not able to read my computer's settings, such as
the hard drive space available.
 I cannot run the GPIB Analyzer. It says that the application was unable to start correctly.
 NI-MAX is behaving strangely or showing devices that are not connected to my
computer.

Solution
Note: Use caution, as this procedure will delete all configuration data stored in MAX including
DAQmx Tasks, DAQmx Global Virtual Channels, custom scales, and device configuration.

If you want to back up your DAQmx Tasks, DAQmx Channels, custom scales or devices, refer
to Export/Import (Save) the System Configuration in Measurement & Automation Explorer
(MAX) prior to resetting your MAX Database.

If the Export Wizard is hanging or you can't access it, an alternative for exporting the
configurations can be found in Recovering the NI-MAX Configuration Without Using the Export
Options, please be cautious when doing this and use it only when the Export Wizard is not
working properly.

Also, if you have any issues exporting your scales you can see the information on Why Can't I
Export My Custom Scales in the MAX Export Configuration Wizard? to find another way to
export them.

Note: You can check your version of NI MAX by going to Help » About

For NI-MAX version 5.0 and newer

Starting in version 5.0, there is a new reset configuration data utility available from within MAX.
This utility allows you to automatically restore the MAX database back to default. If you have
MAX version 5.0 or later installed, use this option by completing the following steps.

Steps to use the reset configuration data utility in MAX:

1. From within MAX, select Tools » Reset Configuration Data.

2. Make sure to save any unsaved progress from any open programs. When prompted with
the following dialog box, select Yes to restart your computer.

3. After your system restarts, the MAX database will be set to default.

For earlier versions of MAX

For versions previous to MAX 5.0, you can run the MAX Database Corruption Removal Tool,
which is designed to automate the process of removing database corruption. To use this tool,
log into an account with Administrator privileges and run the downloaded executable.

Note: If any errors occur while running the tool, go through the steps on Manually Resetting the
MAX Database to make sure the process was completed. If you are unable to complete the
following steps using normal system settings, please reboot your computer in Windows Safe
Mode and attempt to complete the steps once again.

Additional Information
 Resetting the MAX database will just delete all the scales, tasks and configurations of
recognized devices on the Measurement and Automation Explorer itself, it will not impact
the hardware in any way.
 MAX maintains a backup copy of the database file which can be used to restore the
database to a known state. Resetting MAX configuration data will remove the database
file and replace it with the default. This tool can be helpful in rare cases of database
corruption. It can also be helpful in cases where the database is not corrupted, but has
entered a strange state. In those cases, resetting the database may be beneficial in
returning the system to normal operation.
 If the you are unable to open MAX to reset the configuration data, then the data can be
reset outside of MAX by using the ResetNIConfig Tool as described in How Can I Reset
the MAX Database Without Opening NI MAX?
 MAX Database corruptions are rare but may be caused when a system reboots without
being properly shut down due to a power loss or a system crash. If this problem occurs
after installing a newer version of MAX, verify that you have already performed a reboot
of your PC before attempting to reset the database.
