WHY IS ENGINE OIL IMPORTANT?
The primary function of engine oil is to minimise metal-to-metal contact, reducing friction and
wear. With friction comes heat, which causes more wear and distorts moving engine parts.
The oil in your engine maintains a thin, lubricating film on all metal parts that lets
them glide over each other safely and efficiently, minimising friction and wear.
This helps to protect internal engine parts so they last longer and perform
better.
SELECTING THE RIGHT LUBRICANT

There are a number of ways to determine what engine oil is suited
for your vehicle. The best way to find the correct lubricant grade
and recommendation is to refer to your vehicle owner’s manual.
The manual should help you locate:
• Viscosity / SAE rating (e.g. SAE 20W-50)
• API or ACEA rating (e.g. API SN, CF or ACEA A3/B4)
If you are unable to access your vehicle owner’s manual, you

can either consult the Valvoline lubricant recommendation
guide or search online at valvoline.com.au.
You will be presented with a list of up to three lubricant
recommendations. Your driving conditions should dictate
which lubricant product you select. The lubricant guide will
also advise how many litres you will require to perform the oil
change. If you are uncertain what lubricant product is best for
your vehicle, please contact the Valvoline Technical Hotline

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE
‘GOOD’ engine oils are conventional mineral based engine oils suitable for the
everyday driver. Standard service conditions specified in the owner’s manual
can be met with this range of products.
‘BETTER’ engine oils are synthetic blends. They provide more protection
than conventional or ‘good’ grades. These oils are suitable for severe service
conditions where a vehicle may endure stop-start driving or short trips, long
idling periods, towing of heavy loads (such as boats, trailers or driving a utility)
or may require long drain capabilities.
‘BEST’ engine oils are full synthetic grades that offer superior protection.
Severe and high performance applications can be met with this range. If you
want the ultimate protection for your engine, Valvoline recommends the use of
fully synthetic lubricants.

WHAT MAKES A SUPERIOR DIESEL ENGINE?
Oxidation control: Neutralising acid is a balancing act. Acids form when diesel fuel
is burned and escapes into the engine oil, corroding key components. Acid attacks
bearings, pistons and rings with the potential to lead to engine failure. Valvoline
measures an oil’s ability to neutralise these acids and maximise the performance of
diesel engines using Total Base Number (TBN) measures.
Piston cleanliness: Build up of excessive piston deposits can result in ring sticking,
abrasion, and cylinder wear, leading to shorter engine life, increased oil consumption,

WHAT MAKES A GOOD GREASE?
Grease is manufactured by combining three essential components: base oil, thickener and additives.
BASE OIL
The largest component of grease. Base oil may be mineral oil, synthetic oil or any fluid with lubricating
properties.
THICKENER
Any material, which - used in combination with the base oil - produces the solid to semi-fluid consistency.
Different applications and conditions require different thickeners.
ADDITIVES
The most common additives used are oxidation or rust inhibitors, polymers, extreme pressure additives,
anti-wear agents, lubricity agents or friction-reducing agents and dyes or pigments.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD GREASE?

There isn’t just one “good grease”. There are lots of different types, each one suited for a different
application. So the most important thing is to identify the best properties for a specific application. The
most important properties are listed below.
GREASE CONSISTENCY NLGI GRADE

The consistency of a material is how much it resists deformation when force is applied. With lubricating
greases, this is a measure of their relative hardness or softness and is related to flow. Bear in mind that
grease consistency is related to thickener content and has nothing to do with viscosity. The National
Lubricating Grease Institute defines NLGI grades as outlined in the below table by measuring the grease
using what is referred to as the cone drop method.

GLOSSARY
Aniline Point - The lowest temperature at which equal volumes of aniline and hydrocarbon fuel or lubricant base stock are completely miscible.
Cavitation Erosion - Wear characterised by formation of and rapid collapse of bubbles on a surface due to rapid pressure changes.
CDI - Capacitor Discharge Ignition is an ignition device for an internal combustion engine wherein voltage is generated in the ignition coil by
discharging the first and second condensers in synchronism with the ignition signal.
Demulsibility - A measure of fluid’s ability to separate from water.

Detergent - An additive to keep engine parts clean. These are normally metallic soaps with a reserve of basicity to neutralise acids formed
during combustion.
GM dexos™ - A proprietary, global engine oil specification designed to specifically meet the requirements of General Motors vehicles.
Detonation - Uncontrollable burning of the last portion (end gas) of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder of a spark-ignition engine. Also known
as “knock” or “ping”.
Dispersant - An additive that helps suspend solid contaminants in a crankcase oil in colloidal suspension; inhibits and disperses sludge;
reduces the formation of varnish deposits on engine parts and neutralises combustion acids.
Engine Deposit - Hard or persistent accumulation of sludge, varnish and carbonaceous residues due to blow-by of unburned and partially
burned fuel, or partial breakdown of the crankcase lubricant.
Kinematic - Viscosity measure of fluid’s resistance to flow under gravity at a specific temperature (usually 40ºC or 100ºC).
Lands - The circumferential areas between the grooves of a piston.
Low SAPS - A term being used to describe new formulation lubricants which are designed to be compatible with DPF systems. They take the
name low-SAPS from their reduced content of sulphated ash, phosphorous and sulphur chemicals.
Paraffinic - A type of petroleum fluid derived from paraffinic crude oil containing a high proporation of straight chain saturated hydrocarbons.
Often susceptible to cold flow problems.
Poise - Measurement unit of a fluid’s resistance to flow.

Pour Point - The lowest temperature (C) at which the fluid will flow.
Preignition - Ignition of the fuel/air mixture in a gasoline engine before the spark plug fires.
Rerefining - A process of reclaiming used lubricant oils and restoring them to a condition similar to that of virgin stocks.
Sulphated Ash - The ash content of oil. This is a measure of the ash anti-wear metals contained in the components in the oil.
Ring Sticking - Freezing of a piston ring in its groove due to heavy deposits in the piston ring zone.
Viscosity Grade - A measure of the oil’s ability to flow–is one of the most important factors when selecting an engine oil. The Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) has devised a classification system based on viscosity measures. When the oil is warm, it will flow more easily than
when the oil temperature is cold. The correct viscosity grade ensures that the oil is thin enough to flow around the engine during cold start yet
thick enough to protect properly as the engine heats up during operation.
There are two types of SAE classifications: mono-grade and multigrade. Mono-grade oil such as SAE 30 has certain cold weather limitations
and may not flow freely enough to protect the engine in very cold weather conditions. Multi-grade oil such as SAE 10W-40 can be used across
a broad range of temperatures. These oils are widely used because they allow easy starting and pumping at low-temperatures, yet they remain
thick enough at high temperatures to provide effective lubrication. The “W” stands for “winter” and indicates that the oil meets requirements for
low-temperature operation.
