punk rock outfit, Clifford.
Clifford is a three-piece band featuring Bryce
Young, Corey Johnson and Nate Cariveau, all
of Grand Forks. This group has plenty of tal-
ent and enough laughs to go around for a long
time.
A5) How did the band come together,
when did you start playing music and how
long have you known each other?
Corey: The band started in 2007 with
Nate and me. Nate and I had always wanted
to start a punk band together so we started
thinking of people who could play bass in our
band. That's when we added Logan Dachtler
to the mix. A few months after we got to-
gether, Nate left for a year to do missions in
the Czech. During that time the band went on
a stand still until he got back. Once Nate got
back, Logan had decided to do his own thing
which made us think of Bryce who we knew
was very musical and played guitar and
drums. So we thought, heck he likes punk
and he can play bass so he joined. I have
known Nate for years! I remember him as
this weird kid that came to random church
things with Justin Benson when I was in mid-
dle school. I met Bryce through Hope
Covenant Church youth group about 6 years
ago. We all didn't become good friends until
for quite a long time.
A5) How does your musical style carve
your identity in this area?
Corey: There’s not many punk bands
around anymore, so keeping punk alive was
our motive. I think this scene needed a band
that is fun to watch and what's more fun than
punk? Our band is fun, energetic, and intense.
Bryce and Nate can add if they want.
A5) Doesn't Nate have a girlfriend who
lives in the Czech Republic? He gives hope
to long distancers all over the world.
Nate: I do have a girlfriend who lives very
far away, and she is the prettiest lady in all
the world. It takes a special person to be will-
ing to date long distance, much less stand to
be around me. As far as long distancers go,
most (touring) musicians shouldn't have sig-
nificant others, since I strongly believe mu-
sicians shouldn't breed. They are always the
worst parents. They have this tendency to for-
get babies need ear protection. And I have a
feeling babies hate adult music.
A5) Your shows are as intense as they are
fun. Is there any suprise that no instrument
has been broken yet (or is that not true)?
Nate: I actually own none of the equip-
ment in the band... so I would prefer not to
owe Corey or Bryce any money. If I were to
break one of their things, I would owe them
a life debt, much like Chewbacca owed Han
Solo. I think Bryce broke his bass amp. But
that's only because he plugged it into the back
band. I wear nothing but sod for clothes. I am
so cold all the time. I think Corey is the only
intense one in the band. The man is a beast
and shoots deer all the time. Bryce mainly at-
tracts the ladies, what with his shirtless an-
tics. I bring the silly faces and the snark.
Some call me the Great White Snark. None
of us are fun... ever.
A5) What bands have the dominant influ-
ences in your music?
Bryce: I'm definitely influenced by a lot
of punk bands. The kind of stuff I used to lis-
ten to at the skatepark. Bands like Lagwagon,
Dogwood, and MXPX really shaped my in-
fluence but a lot also came from hardcore
bands like The Chariot and Comeback Kid.
Nate: All of us like punk and hardcore... I
am really inspired by experimental music. I'm
not going to name drop some band no one
knows, but I like music that is barely music.
There is just something really appealing
about being on the fringes of music. I feel
like that is what punk set out to be. I also was
really inspired by the punk community. I
grew up going to see Tooth and Nail bands
in a better economy than nowadays). When
bands played these shows, they were always
so grateful for anyone coming out and sup-
porting them. They treated us like brothers
and sisters, not dollar signs. That's where I
came from, and that's why I'm pretty sure I'll
never make it in the music industry.
A5) Why do you guys play music?
Bryce: To get rich and famous and exploit
everyone we can. (Author’s Note: Sarcasm

There are not many bands in which every
member does it all- sing, bass, drums, and
guitar. Clifford is as unique as the big red
klutz of a dog itself, also named Clifford; al-
though the group wasn’t named after the dog.

the corner and for families across
the country that also means gath-
ering for holiday reunions.
Whether the get-together is a large group
gathering in a vacation destination or the
whole extended family is headed your way,
here are some stress-relieving tips to keep this

* Get the word out early. Choosing the lo-
cation of the family reunion in advance can
be a true money saver! Booking early also re-
moves the hassle of finding a room at the last

space around the house for all those aunts, un-
cles, nieces and nephews can be a chore. Why

household would earn for all the jobs they

So how much is a stay-at-home parent's
work really worth? According to Salary.com's
2010 Mother's Day Paycheck for Mom's Job,
the time mothers spend performing 10 typical
job functions would equate to an annual
salary of $117,867 for a stay-at-home mom.
Historically, families often undervalue the
primary caregiver's contributions, and that
can lead to some troublesome circumstances
in the event that there is a disability or unex-
pected death and the caregiver's contributions
are no longer available to the family.
The result is that many "stay-at-homers"
have been inadequately accounted for in fam-
ily financial plans, leaving both the financial
and emotional stability of the family at even
greater risk if funds aren't available to help
cope as a family rebuilds.
"When I talk to families who have made
the decision for one parent to stay home, I'm
surprised by how often families overlook the
value of the work being done by the family
caregiver, whether that's a man or a woman,"

he North Valley Arts Council
and the Grand Forks Mayor's
Office are proud to announce the
October 2010 Mayor's Choice
artist: Kimberly Forness Wilson.
In celebration of Kim’s work with youth
and her love for singing, students from the
Bel Canto Studio of Voice will perform dur-
ing the Mayor’s Choice reception. Under the
direction of Maria Kennedy Williams, the
following students will perform: Billy
Beaton, Chloe Omlid, Evan Moser, Haley
Larson, Ryan King, Leah Biberdorf, Kelly
Knutson and Daniella Lima.
Kimberly Forness Wilson grew up in
Grand Forks and in Devils Lake. After grad-
uating from Red River High School in 1977,
Kim worked with Gail Roan Pearson, Ph.D.,
a Grand Forks psychotherapist specializing
in women’s issues and women’s addictions.
Kim’s interest in Holistic Healing took her to
Maui, Hawaii, where she became certified as
a holistic trainer.
In Maui, Kim met her future husband, Jib.
Kim and Jib returned to Grand Forks so that
Jib could live one winter in North Dakota.
Jib did so, and promptly moved back to
Storyboard Tales Wins EMPixx Award
Grand Forks, North Dakota, film maker,
Les Sholes, has recently won an EMPixx
Award for his Internet Video Series, “story-
boardtales.com”. The “storyboardtales.com”
website features a series of illustrated, dark,
comedic videos reminiscent of “Alfred
Hitchcock Presents” and “The Twilight
Zone.” The narrated episodes are between
30-50 seconds in length and contain an aver-
age of 10 sketches each.

Hawaii. Kim graduated from UND with a
B.S. Degree in Psychology, then returned to
Maui in 1986. She and Jib were married in
1987.
Kim had the great fortune to spend the
next 15 years working with Maui’s youth and
their families, combining her training in the
arts and holistic health in a variety of settings.
She ran visual and theater arts programs for
the Department of Education, ran the Man-
aolu Youth Shelter, was Educational Coordi-
nator for Maui Youth Theatre, Executive
Director for Theatre Maui and Executive Di-
rector for Kihei Youth Center.
Kim and Jib decided to become foster par-
ents and guardians for kids who needed extra
family, and in 1998 they met Matthew Ikaika,
who became part of their adopted family in
2001.
In 2003, Kim suffered a freak accident.
While working for Hawaii’s Department of
Health, she turned her head and fractured her
skull. It was a devastating experience - Kim
lost the gag reflex on her left side, experi-
enced stabs of incapacitating pain, and lost
her ability to sing. Kim’s mom, Ramona,
came to Maui to try to help her daughter cope
with the pain and to deal with the loss of
Kim’s most loved creative outlet, singing.
Her mother insisted, “Paint, it will distract
you from the pain.”
Kim trusted her mother and tried it. The
the American Pixel Academy for outstanding
achievment in the creation of Moving Pixels.
The 2010 competition was open to the United
States and Canada and received almost 700
entries. Each entry was judged on a standard
of excellence. Awards were honored in five
categories such as TV Commercials, TV Pro-
grams, Corporate Videos, Internet Moving
Pixels and Independent Films and Videos.

paint flowed and the pain was forgotten for a
moment - the first moment in months. The
process helped Kim experience brief and
growing periods of relief from the pain. In
June of 2004, Kim & Jib refinanced their
home and went to the Mayo Clinic in
Rochester, MN. During exploratory surgery,
it was discovered that Kim actually had a
bone fragment tearing away at tissue and
nerves.
Now a new chapter of healing had to
begin. Kim, Jib and Matthew moved to North
Dakota to be near family and the Mayo
Clinic. Kim has spent the last 6 years pursu-
ing recovery through Physical Therapy, Re-
habilitation, Chiropractic Treatment, Pain
Clinic and massive amounts of family time

Platinum Award, the highest honor in the
competition.
Sholes said he is pleased with the judges’
comments in saying that the series is “addic-
tive’ since that was his exact marketing strat-
egy going into the project.
Sholes said his goal was to produce a se-
ries of illustrated short films, artistically
crafted by incorporating bizarre, twisted
events and creepy characters. Each video fea-
tures an unpredictable ending, created specif-
and creativity. She, Jib and Matt, together
with the love of all their families, have cre-
ated a new and wonderful life between Grand
Forks and Maui.
With all this Kim says:
“I have a new definition of a great day. It
is not whether I am totally productive all day
but that I am productive during the day.
Being productive is now not all work either,
it is a great day when I do something for
someone else, call someone I love, work a lit-
tle, paint a little and enjoy some part of the
day. Healing from a catastrophe requires a lot
of redefining and this new way of looking at
the world is working for me!”

most talented and prolific artists, and has be-
come well known for her generosity and

Every three months, starting last July,
Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown chooses a
visual artist to show his or her art in the
atrium of City Hall. There is an opening re-
ception for each artist.

ND Cycling is a club for both
the advanced rider and those
who just enjoy getting some
exercise on a bike. With mul-
tiple rides each week, there are lots of oppor-
tunities to go out. However, when the
weather gets cold, most people stay away
from their bikes, at least, until now.
UND Cycling will be running its second
annual Cyclocross events this November and
have already kicked off one race on Hal-
loween.
I know many of you have already asked
the question in your head, what is Cy-
clocross? Well, UND Cycling member David
Cardarelli describes it like this, “It’s like a
steeplechase on bikes. It’s for the masochist.
It’s a torturous hour in cold, wet, muddy con-
ditions.”
Cyclocross originated in Europe when it
got too cold to ride on the road. So instead,
they developed races that went through fields
and down in the ditches. As popularity grew,
the event quickly caught on in the US and
continues to grow at a rapid rate. Some are
serious athletes who compete in only Cy-
clocross events, others continue to use it as
a way to stay in shape on the bike during the

the community to come out and see that you
can do more on a bike in North Dakota than
50 mile road rides or ride along the Green-
way,” UND Cycling member Matt Burton-
Kelly said. “Come out, check it out and bring
your buddies with.”
The UND Cycling team isn’t all about
racing like you might expect. Its a casual par-
ticipation in which you can choose when you
want to ride. Some days they have around
twenty riders, others only a few. They ride
about five times a week, when it’s warm.
They have rides designed to be fast and oth-
ers where the slowest rider leads at his or her
pace.
“We’re getting a lot more casual interest
in the club now as opposed to people just
showing up looking for races,” Cardarelli
mentioned.
UND Cycling does run a team that com-
petes in the USA Cycling Collegiate Divi-
sion.
“Really we just all like bikes. We like
talking about bikes, we like riding bikes. We
have all different types of riders. Some are
really serious and into racing, others like to
just go out and get something to eat. We just
want to make riding accessible to everyone
in the community,” Burton-Kelly said.
The Cyclocross events will be on Novem-
ber 7 and 14 at 2:00 PM, but show up early
to register and get a pre-run of the course.
