Introduction of Energy Efficient Motor
▪ Most electric motors manufactured prior to 1975 were designed and
constructed to meet minimum performance levels as a trade-off for a low
purchase price.

▪ But in 1977, the (NEMA) recommended a procedure for labeling standard

three-phase motors with an average nominal efficiency. These efficiencies
represent for a large number of motors of the same design.

▪A motor to be considered as Energy

Efficient Motor if its performance
must equal or exceed the nominal
full-load efficiency values provided
by the (NEMA) shown in the table.
Need of an Energy Efficient Motor
 When there is a new installation or modification to a plant.

 Old motors are damaged and need rewinding.

 Existing motors are under loaded or overloaded.

 Protecting other devices.

Motor Component’s losses
 Copper loss: Depends on the effective resistance of motor winding.

 Iron loss: Depends on the magnetic structure of core and results from a
combination of hysteresis and eddy current effect.

 Friction and windage loss: friction loss occurs due to the friction in the
bearings of the motor and the windage loss occurs due the ventilation fan and
other rotating elements of the motor .

 Stray load losses : These are residual losses in motor which are load related
and are generally assumed to vary as the square of the output torque.
Design modification to achieve maximum
efficiency and reduce losses
Benefits Of Implementing Energy Efficient
Motor
 Economic Savings Potential : Total electricity consumption in Europe in
2000 was 2574 billion kWh. Of this, 614 billion kWh was consumed by motor
driven systems. According to Energy Dept. by using EEM 181 billion kWh can
be saved.
 Environmental Benefits : The burning of fossil fuels for electricity
generation produces various types of Green House Gases. So by implementing
EEM , electricity consumption will reduce – electricity production will reduce
– gas emission will reduce.

 Micro Economical Benefits: The pay-back periods for most investments in

energy efficient motors are relatively short, ranging from 3 months to 3 years.

 Macro Economical Benefits : have direct effect of creating jobs in

➢ Energy service companies
➢ Manufacturers of motors, variable speed drives
➢ Jobs in energy or maintenance departments;
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages

 Energy efficient motors operate with efficiencies

that are typically 2-6% higher than standard motors.
therefore they have less operating costs.

 EEM has a lower slip so they have a higher speed

than standard motor which results reduction in
rotor losses and temperature yield longer rotor and
bearing life.

 EEM can reduce maintenance costs and improve operations in industry due to
robustness and reliability.

 Temperature rise is less than standard motors.

Disadvantages
 Portability.
 Initial cost is more.
 Starting current is more in case of an EEM than STM. Because of this,
sometimes short circuit protection may trip.
 EEM are not suitable for those applications where higher starting torque is
required.

Applications
 Energy efficient motors are specially suited for industries which are power
intensive and equipments which run on constant load for long duration.

 For example: fans, blowers, pumps, compressors etc. are some of the
driven equipments and industries such as textile, paper, cement, power
generation etc.
Conclusion

Finally I can conclude that most of the industrial loads having motor are
consuming 70% of the total electricity. So it is better to replace standard
motors with EEM where ever economical. So that we can
Save energy.
Save money.
Save atmosphere from pollution .
