Impact Survey Reflection

Section 1: Survey

The survey was implemented during my last week of student teaching in Annette Maat’s second-

grade classroom. Students were each given a half sheet of paper that had the eight questions on it.

I left the room while Mrs. Maat gave the survey to the students. She read the questions out loud to

the students and also told them that for the last question, they could give a suggestion or a

compliment. 25 students filled out the survey (3 were absent). The survey was given towards the

end of the school day after a science lesson.

Section 2: Results

The following questions were given to the students. The students had the choice of responding

with Yes, Sometimes, or No for questions 1-7.

1. I felt comfortable asking questions.

2. I learned a lot from the student teacher.

3. The student teacher helped me.

4. The student teacher taught lessons so that I could understand.

5. The student teacher treated me with kindness and respect.

6. The student teacher was organized and prepared.

7. The student teacher was able to answer my questions.

8. Is there anything you would like the student teacher to know that would help him/her

become a great teacher? For example, I wish the student teacher would have… Please share

your thoughts!

I was surprised that there was not a single no throughout all the results. The majority of

students selected yes for all of the questions. I was happy to see that all students said yes to the

question about kindness and respect. This means so much to me because it is always my goal to

make sure all students are treated well and feel safe and welcome. The higher number of maybes

on the question about answering questions surprises me a little. I felt as though I tried my best to

answer all the students’ questions. But, moving forward, I plan to possibly revisit the question after

by asking if my answer helped or if I answered their question fully.

Section 3: Final Thoughts

After looking over the results, I am much more confident in my abilities as an educator. As

they say, you are always your worst critique and I feel as though I have been a little too hard on

myself this semester. The feedback I have received from students and other teachers has changed

my mind a little though. It is comforting to see that I had a positive impact on the students.

As far as what I can improve on, I believe I need to make sure that the lessons I am teaching

are reaching all students. There was a high number of students who claimed that only sometimes

did I teach lessons they could understand. I plan to improve on this by creating more differentiated

lessons that involved engagements for all learning types. I also can improve on this by taking

advantage of the formative assessment results. Pulling small groups and reteaching is something I

need to work on as I move forward from here.

Overall, my experience was a success. I taught the students a lot of concepts and I learned

a lot as well. I improved on my classroom management, flexibility, confidence and lesson

planning. I had a lot of practice with thinking ahead and finding the best ways to maximize teaching

time. It is clear to me, based on the results, the students enjoyed my time in the classroom as much

as I enjoyed being a part of their education. I am even more excited to have my own classroom

now, and to make a difference in many more children’s’ lives from here on out.
