OVERVIEW

Enhancement class is a program which gives opportunity to students to pass the subject. This was implemented
by the Department of Education to lessen failure rate among schools. This is an instruction provided to students
who need more support in areas and is designed to close the gap between what a student knows and what he’s
expected to know, targeting all areas the student has difficulty. Also, to help students who get distracted by other
students or frustrated when there is a lot going in on the classroom.
The conduct of remedial class/enhancement class has been a practice in all schools nowadays. Pasonanca
National High School has been consistent in implementing this program quarterly to unlock student’s difficulty
and assist slow performers improve their learning or mastery of a lesson when the grade obtained is low in a
particular subject. These are often students who function at a lower than average level because of a certain learning or
behavioral problem.

The term (Remediation/Enhancement class) is given after the quarter exam, to fill in the missed activities,
quizzes and performance task of the student. Students with a grade 72%-74% are given a chance to pass the
subject to make it up to 75%. Every after the quarter exam teachers would evaluate the students performance
and identify if the students need to attend the enhancement class or not. Teachers then will prepare the
attendance and the necessary tests she/he has to conduct. Every lesson taught must be evaluated in order to
determine whether it is mastered or not. Teachers are only given 3 days to conduct the said enhancement and
are expected to submit an Enhancement/Remedial report to the office of the principal to ensure the proper
implementation of the program.

When the performance of the student fall below the 75% level set under mastery learning, the teacher should
make extra effort to discover where she failed in her teaching. She should re-examine the strategies and lesson
activities introduced, as to their appropriateness and suitability to the mental capabilities of the students. If
found to be deficient, the teacher, in re-teaching the lesson should plan it in such a manner that the activities are
simple, easier to grasp and carry out the lesson’s aim more effectively than the first attempt. And if, students
still do not extend an extra effort to attain the passing rate, the student then will obtain a failing grade for that
quarter, and is encourage to make it on the next quarter.

Moreover, teachers are expected to teach the student in a step-by-step manner, not skipping the contents of the
topic and in a different way from the way he was taught the first time around. It includes a way to assess what the
student has learned and whether he’s ready to move ahead.

Enhancement class requires full attention to every student, after the discussion, an evaluation is expected on
that particular topic, in a written, oral or performance task.

Parents of the students should also be informed if their child has to undergo remedial/enhancement because some
teachers conduct the program beyond class hours for the purpose of not delaying the next lesson for the next quarter.
If found out that students did not attend/ is not attending enhancement classes, their grades will be as is, and will not
be change. The attendance will be the evidence the teachers are holding once parents will come and ask about their
child’s performance. And in some cases, if parents come to complain about their child’s grade, the principal also
have a copy of it. A conference slip will be given to affix their signature about the issue concerning the performance
of their child. This will be one of the evidences that the parent/guardian is knowledgeable about the performance of
their child.

The Pasonanca Barangay Chairman Efigenio Julian Jr. gives words to the parents that 100% of the graduating
students should be able to graduate and march at the end of the school year. So, the implementation of this program
would really help the students and school as well to minimize the drop out and failure rate of the school.

II. AGENCY
This study chooses Pasonanca National High School because they have the least number of failure rates among
schools in Zamboanga City every school year.
According to Mr. Anthony A. Bernas, the assistant school principal and registrar said that, Pasonanca Barangay
High School was established on March 27, 2013 during the third term of the Mayor Celso L. Lobregat The
initial temporary site of Pasonanca National High School was inside the premises of the Pasonanca Elementary
School occupying 3 5 rooms and 1 faculty room which was the previous clinic of the school, and then was
moved to the area sorrounding the Pasonanca Barangay Hall which happened to be having classes under the
trees and canopies.
In the first year of the school, there were only 9 teachers who teach a number of 700-800 students. Some
teachers handle 2-3 subjects and they meet classes randomly due to the fact that the school lacks teachers. In the
year 2015, a set of 16 teachers came and was able to handle a class which improves the performance of the
school. But the struggle was never easy, teachers really find it hard to discipline the students, they got used of
going in and out of their room, cut classes, and most of the time they are absent. This is because of the reason
that they have random classes before most of the time they do not have class. Also, the school itself is not
conducive for learning, destructions are just around, rooms has no doors, roofs have holes which really disturb
the class on a rainy day, and the there’s no floor which becomes too muddy when they’re inside the class.
The struggle lessened when the City Government purchased the lot at Lantawan for the Pasonanca National
High School, makeshift classrooms were built and BDO donated a 2 storey 4 classroom building.
In 2016, Cong. Lobregat together with DepEd and DPWH officials validated and inspected the site for the
construction of a 3 storey 15 classroom building to be funded by the National Government through DepEd and
to be implemented DPWH IX. In May 11, 2016 Pasonanca National High School was converted from Don
Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School – Annex.
Last December 18, 2017 Congressman Lobregat together with DPWH and DepEd Officials turned over a 3
storey 17 classroom building to Pasonanca National High School Principal Jonathan Silao and Pasonanca
Barangay Chairman Efigenio Julian Jr. Also present during the turnover were Councilors Myra Paz Valderossa-
Abubakar and Councilor Rudy Lim.
Presently the students population is 1,330, there are and 21 classrooms, 40 teachers and 28 teachers are
expected this coming school year 2018-2019. But the school still needs additional classrooms and it was last
September, Congressman Lobregat together DepEd Division Superintendent Felix Romy Triambulo, DPWH-
DEO Officials and Barangay Chairman Efigenio Julian Jr. inspected and validated the site for the construction
of an additional 3 to 4 storey school building.
Base from the interview I conducted, I’ve realized that the problem is the school itself which makes the students
to behave uninterested in their studies. There’s a lot of distraction which affects their learning, the student’s
behavior was influenced by the problem of the school, lack of teachers, lack of facilities, and classrooms are not
conducive for learning.

III. ISSUE YOU DISCOVERED

One of the challenges that the Pasonanca National High School in the society is to create a learning culture
which allows students of different faiths, creeds, religions, beliefs to live together, know the differences, which
makes each student unique within. As the Schools Division motto says “Mas Alegre na Escuela”, students must
enjoy learning, and find the spirit of home and family in the school.

Another is poverty. Education has not eliminated poverty, they reflect and promote a middleclass way of
education not knowing that there are students from this school who do not live with their parents, and some do
not even have parents anymore. They implementing programs, which cannot easily be offered by the school due
to lack of funds and budget from the government .The school lacks facilities especially computers, and
nowadays computers is one of the most important thing a school should have. The students lack the capacity to
compete with the other schools in the society who are advance in terms of technology, knowledge and research.
Poverty really affects the students from coming to school, some of them come to class without “baon”, and
others walk kilometers to come to school. There are also students who are problematic which distracts them
from learning, they cannot concentrate from their class making them uninterested listening to their teachers.
Some cannot even do their homework, and cannot perform on a specific task.
The challenge now for the school is how to overcome these factors affecting the learning of the students. The
principal Mr. Jonathan G. Silao is giving full attention to the education of the students. He coordinates with the
government officials in the community, stakeholders, and other possible donors for the improvement of the
school.
And as far as the remedial/enhancement class is concern, the teachers find this program an advantage to
problematic students and at the same time a disadvantage since most of the students become reluctant in their
studies. They are used to the attitude of “bahala na” and “basta pasado lang”, less effort has been observe to
most of the students. Absenteeism and laziness has also been observed because they believe that at the end of
the quarter teachers will be conducting enhancement class giving them the opportunity to pass.
Possible solution to these can be suggested to the head of the school to limit the number of absences per quarter,
and considerations should not be acknowledged in submitting activities/ assignments. Performance task should
not be anymore given in the enhancement class, and parents/guardian must be knowledgeable with this
conditions.

IV. RESEARCH
Children with learning difficulties have the same psychological needs and characteristics as other children.
Some of them, however, may be less able to organize their perceptions or to comprehend abstract ideas and
concepts. Some may have poor memory, poor level of motivation, short span of attention in work situations or
associated behavioural problems. Above all, owing to encounters of failure they tend to have low expectations
of themselves and, having rarely distinguished themselves at school, also have low aspirations (Handbook on
Remedial Teaching of English in Primary Schools)
Lately, it became an accepted practice in the elementary and high school to conduct remedial classes. Logic
dictates that a student learns at his own pace. Anybody cannot force a child to master skill which is not
commensurate to his abilities. In reality, there are children who fall behind in their basics and advancement of
the subject which is not fully understood by them. This condition calls for remedial classes (Remedial Classes
Journal, 2014)

This is an alternate approach for the regular classroom teacher in instructing the slow learner. Remedial
teaching is the use of activities, techniques and practices to eliminate weaknesses or deficiencies that the slow
learner is known to have. For example deficiencies in basic math skills are reduced or eliminated by re-teaching
the content that was not learned earlier. The instructional environment does not change, as in the compensatory
approach. Conventional instructional techniques such as drill and practice might be employed (The Hindu,
2016)

Enhancement/remedial classes are necessary for students who don’t understand a subject properly. As teachers,
we should keep in mind that not all students have the same capacity to understand each and every subject. In
addition, our students have different learning styles which should be considered while teaching and conducting
remedial/enhancement classes.

Our worth as educators is not merely measured based on the instructions that we give on a daily basis. We have to
make sure that our student learn from us, that little we develop them holistically. Since extending our efforts
depends upon the needs of our students, remedial/enhancement classes serve as an input to attain a better
performance on the part of the students.

V. ASSESSMENT OF THE CASE STUDY

As an educator, I find it hard to analyze the problem since the practice of conducting remedial class is a must in
the institutions and schools. How are we going to educate the students to strive hard without thinking of the
remedial and enhancement class given at the end of the quarter to help them pass the subject because majority
of them just rely on this program. Their study habits and behavior towards studies is influenced making it for
the teacher’s effort becomes worthless.
From this, I learned that teachers should develop lessons that incorporate students’ interests, needs, and
experiences, in the classroom to make these students feel engaged in the learning process. Encourage them to
participate in the discussion even in their own language so they will be able to express themselves easily.
Remedial/Enhancement class must be avoided if possible as it does not help our students develop their
strengths. Teachers must be patient, it is very important for us to know our students personality and background
at home to understand the problem affecting their studies and understand factors affecting education.
