The level of entropy is the degree of disorder in a given system. This is the reverse of the degree of
information that is present. Hence negentropy is the build-up of information, increase of meaning
~E.E.Rehmus
1. "the second law of thermodynamics says that entropy always increases with time"
lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.
entropy is thermodynamicly related to an increase in thermal energy supplied to a system.
and the energy that the atmospheric system would release this energy as heat when it is
reradiated as infrared radiation by the greenhouse gases, it would seem logical that the
entropy would increase in the atmosphere thus causing more severe storms and other
energy related events. This is one of the hazards associated with the increase of methane
and CO2 in the atmosphere.
Negentropy is reverse entropy. It means things becoming more in order. By 'order' is meant
organisation, structure and function: the opposite of randomness or chaos. One example
of negentropy is a star system such as the Solar System. Another example is life. The sun and
water and nutrients go through processes of photosynthesis to create geometrically structured
glucose molecules for the plant to feed on. Life uses fractal geometries to create more life.
Form follows Flow
• Entropy –homogeneity or Disorder and decay go up over Time (example: hotter environment transfers
heat to colder ice until of equal temperature and ice (crystal structure) melts into water (disordered
molecules running around a liquid)
Fractals are geometrical forms that express copies of themselves, both up and down in scale, they can
be living or non-living. Fractals are nature’s way to let heat do work most effectively, to design forms
that follow ever fitter, further flows
Plant-Ecosystem Design
• Plants use the Golden ratio because it allows optimal strength to weight, windstress
• Ecosystems like a forest or coral reef also use these growth geometries - a forest or coral reef
synergises with their environments
• Map them on to our civilisation if we are to survive in a similar harmony with the biosphere -
that accounts for the natural tendency of all flow systems (animate and inanimate) to change into
configurations that offer progressively greater flow access over time. The progress made with the
Constructal law covers the broadest range of science, from heat and fluid flow and geophysics, to
animal design, technology evolution, and social organization (economics, government). This review
presents the state of this fast growing field, and draws attention to newly opened directions for
original research.
