 What is angle? How it is measured?

Angle is derived from the Latin word angulus, which means corner. It is defined as a figure when two
rays share a common endpoint called the vertex. Angles are measured either in degree or radian measures. A
protractor is used to determine the measure of an angle in degrees.

 How to use the protractor in measuring angles?

In using the protractor, make sure that the cross bar in the middle of the protractor is aligned with the
vertex and one of the legs of the angle is aligned with one side of the line passing through the cross bar. The
measurement of the angle is determined by its other leg.
Examples.
Measure the angles below. Use your protractor to check your estimate.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Approximate measures of temperature.

2. Convert unit of measure from degree Celsius to degree Fahrenheit and vice versa.

Now, you will answer first the given pre-test to check if you have stored knowledge about the topic.

What to do before ? Pretest

PRE- TEST
Direction: Read the sentences below carefully. Choose the correct answer and write in your notebook.

A. Choose the more reasonable temperature for each situation

1. fever: 39 ℃ 𝑜𝑟 68℃
2. boiling water: 100℃ 𝑜𝑟 100℉
3. cold water: 2℃ 𝑜𝑟 15℃
4. hot soup: 75℉ 𝑜𝑟 75℃

B. Choose the correct answer and write in your notebook.

Convert each to Fahrenheit
5. 14℃ ( 57.2℉ 𝑜𝑟 82.8℉ )
6. 115℃ (264.6℉ 𝑜𝑟 239℉ )

Convert each to Celsius

7. 86℉ ( 15.78℃ 𝑜𝑟 30℃ )
8. 122℉ ( 50°C or 35.78°C )

9. A recipe calls for an oven setting of 340℉ .Find its equivalent temperature in the Celsius scale.
( 156.89°C or 171.11° C )

10. A normal body temperature is 37°C. Find its equivalent temperature in Fahrenheit scale.
( 98.6°F or 124.2°F )

Before we will start with our lesson proper, you will perform first the given activity on the next page.
Activity

Materials needed: thermometer, tap and lukewarm water

Note: Ask assistance of your teacher in performing the activity.

Instructions:
A. Measure the temperature of the following and record on the table.
a. your body
b. tap water
c. lukewarm water

B. Temperature (in ᵒC)

a. Your body
b. tap water
c. lukewarm water

Temperature is the hotness and coldness of an object or substance. The commonly used scales are Celsius (ᵒC)
for the Metric system and Fahrenheit ( °F) for English system, the base SI unit for temperature is the Kelvin(K). Unlike
Celsius and Fahrenheit which are considered degrees, the Kelvin is considered as an absolute unit of measure and
therefore can be worked on algebraically.

What are the conversion factors of measuring temperature? How it is derived?

Study the illustrations.

What have you observed?

Can you explain the Illustration above?
Let’s analyze.

Equating each side gets…

A.
°C ° F −32
= Simplify
100 180

°C ° F−32
= Cross Multiply
100 180

(180) ° C = (100)( ° F − 32) Simplify

(180) ° C (100)( ° F−32)

= Dividing both sides and reduce to lowest term
180 180

B.

Did you understand? If you don’t, try to analyzed the equations again.

Let’s practice…

1. Convert 37°C to °F

Solution:

°F = 9/5 ( °C ) + 32
°F = 9/5 (37) + 32
°F = 98.6
2. Convert 70°F to °C

Solution:

°C = 5/9 ( °F -32 )
°C = 5/9 ( 70 – 32 )
°C = 5/9 (38)
°C = 21.11

Lets Practice more….

Convert the following temperature.

1. 65°C to °F
2. 112°C to °F
3. 300°F to°C
4. 220°C to °F
5. 212°F to °C

To check your understanding on our lesson, you will take the post-test below.
