4. Objectives of the proposed project-(2000 characters)

The objective of the present study is to remove and degrade two Azo dyes, Methyl Orange and Bromothymol
Blue from aqueous solution with the help of nZVI and nZVI composite, both synthesized biologically.
The major objective can be subdivided into the following objectives.
The objective of the present study is to remove two selected Azo Dyes, Methyl Orange and Bromothymol
Blue from synthetic aqueous solution, commonly used in textile industries with the help of nano zero valent
Iron particles synthesized biologically and nano bio composite. The synthesis will be done with the bioactive
substances derived from macro algae and Sal (Shorea robusta) leaves.
Nano bio composites will also be synthesized using the same biomaterials. Green synthesis will rule out the
use of other chemical toxic reducing agents for nano synthesis. However, the synthesis is a tedious process
and the study comprises of optimization of the bioactive substance dose for optimum synthesis.
The next objective is to characterize the nano particles synthesized with the help of SEM, TEM, FTIR, EDX
to assure the synthesis of nano particles and their nature.
After synthesis, the objective is to study the photocatalytic biodegradation of the two Azo Dyes in closed box
chamber and optimize the operating parameters during the reaction in batch mode.
The adsorption study of the nano bio composite will also be done for the two dyes and optimization of the
operating parameters during the reactions in batch mode will be done.
Next, the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation processes will be coupled to remove and degrade the
dyes most effectively.
Finally, the efficiency of the process will be tested on raw wastewater from textile industry.

5. Review of R&D in the proposed area (National & International Status, Importance, patents etc.)
{3000 characters}
Textile industry uses natural as well as artificial fibres. Dyeing requires a lot of water and thus a lot of
waste water is generated. These waste water contain dyes, inorganic and organic salts, suspended matters,
colors, etc. these water are high in BOD, COD, organics etc. their discharge into water bodies causes
various diseases in human and animals, are harmful for soil and makes the water useless for various
purpose. There are various techniques available for treatment of textile dyes but most of them are not
economical and impractical. Some of them are:- ACTIVATED CARBON which are very expensive and
involves loss of adsorbent, BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT which require large area and long treatment
time, CATALYTIC WET OXIDATION are capable of removing only very low concentration organic
contaminants and produce CO₂ in the process, CHEMICAL OXIDIZING AGENTS produce toxic by-
products, ELECTROCHEMICAL DESTRUCTION involves very high cost. (WATER RESEARCH
47(2013) 2613-2632 SAMUEL CN TANG, IRENE MC Lo).

Using nano zero valent iron has major advances over the techniques described above. nZVI are capable of
removing and degrading the dyes. Decolorization is efficient and quick. Applicable for high as well as
low concentration is possible. This process can be integrated with other technique to increase efficiency
and reduce the contact time. Treatment is economic as well as regeneration and reuse of nZVI is possible.
Remediation of soil and ground water is also possible and it can treat wide range of dyes and other
pollutants. (BIOTECHNOLOGY ADVANCES 31(2013) 346-356 AMIT KR MITTAL, YUSUF
CHISTI, UTTAM CHANDRA BANARJEE)

Biological synthesis of nZVI is an environmental friendly way which helps to eliminate use of
powerful reducing agent which are harmful for environment. Ferric chloride solution was reduced
with macro algae and brown seaweed extract. Sulphated polysaccharides, which is present in algae
helped in reduction process. The reaction completed in one step. The average dia formed was18+/-4
nm. Analysis from green tea leaves also produced good results. (Green Synthesis of Iron
Nanoparticles and their Environmental Applications and Implications Sadia Saif, Arifa Tahir,
Yongsheng Chen).
Different parameters of adsorption (of methyl orange) process effected efficiency of the process.
Adsorption and removal was high at lower pH(below5) compared to higher pH.percentage of
removal increased with increase in dosing (upto 2gram/L). the uptake of dye decreased with increase
in temperature as bond weakened between adsorbate and adsorbant. ( removal of textile dyes(methyl
orange and maxilon blue Mohammed Bassim Alqaragully)

7. Work plan (including detailed methodology and time schedule)-(5000 characters)

Literature review
I will study the literature review in the proposed area and collect information and knowledge of previous
work done in this area, methods adopted technology used, efficiency and economical viability of these
techniques. This will help me know the area which needs further study. This will help me in forming an
overall plan and modification that I can do to take my work forward.
Time -1month
Synthesis of nano material
To synthesise nano zero valent iron I will use biological method in place of chemical reduction to minimize
chemical use. I will use macro algae and Shorea robusta (Shal) for synthesis of nZVI.
Either of FeSO₄ or FeCl₂ will be used to get iron nano particles. plants contain polyphenols which
supports this process. No additional surfactant or polymer will be used. The process of reduction
will occur at room temperature. FeCl₂ will be reduced with macro algae extract and with shal
leaf separately.
Time -1.5 months
Characterization of nZVI
The size of the particle should be less than 100nm. The particles will be checked for their size and
their characterization will be done using Scanning electon microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform
Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) in BIT Mesra lab, while the sample will be
send to IIT, Bombay for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). All these analysis will help to know the
size, surface area and their pattern of layout.
Time -2 months
Nano composite formation
Nano composite will be prepared by introducing nZVI over bio char. The char will be made of the same
materials that were used for synthesis of nZVI.
Time - 1month
Degradation of selected Azo dyes
nZVI and nZVI composite will be separately integrated to uv-radiation to induce degradation of selected
dyes. The process will go in batch mode. Photocatalytic biodegradation of the two Azo Dyes will be studied
at varying physical parameters such as pH, temperature, dye concentration etc.. Optimization of the
environmental parameters will be done for maximum dye (selected) removal. Other properties such as
decolourisation efficiency with respect to contact time will also be studied.
Time-2.5 months
Study on raw industrial waste water
At last the optimized nano material/nano composite will be tested against raw waste water from textile
industries. Removal efficiency will be studied.
Time- 1month

Futureplans(1200characters)
Water soluble unfixed dyes and inorganic salts are the major pollutants in textile dyeing industry
wastewater. Existing treatment methods fail to degrade textile dyes and have limitations too. The
inadequate treatment of textile dyeing wastewater is a major concern when effluent is directly
discharged into the nearby environment. Long term disposal threatens the environment, which
needs reclamation. The application of nZVI on textile dye degradation is receiving great attention in

the recent years because nZVI particles are highly reactive towards the pollutant, less toxic, and
economical. The nZVI particles aggregate quickly with respect to time and the addition of supports
such as resin, nickel, zinc, bentonite, biopolymer, kaolin, rectorite, nickel-montmorillonite, bamboo,
cellulose, biochar, graphene, and clinoptilolite enhanced the stability of iron nanoparticles. Inclusion
of supports may in turn introduce additional toxic pollutants, hence green supports are
recommended. The majority of investigations concluded dye color removal as textile dye compound
removal, which is not factual. Very few studies monitored the removal of total organic carbon and
observed the products formed. Integration of nZVI with other suitable technique to achieve complete
degradation of textile dye and also to treat multiple pollutants in the real textile dyeing wastewater
can be studied. It is highly recommended to perform more bench-scale and pilot-scale studies to
apply this technique to the textile effluent contaminated sites. Commented [DC1]: This is repeatation. Write what are the
future plans after this?

9. Where the Research Findings/Developed Equipment can be used in future (1000characters)

This finding may prove to be useful in future biological synthesis of nZVI and nano bio composite of
nZVI. It may prove to be useful in textile industry where Bromothymol Blue and Methyl Orange are
used for dyeing. The finding may also be used for decolorization of waste water and adsorption of
toxic chemicals by char. The magnetic property of nZVI will further enhance their reusability and
reduce cost, making it economical for large scale use. The same technique may further be studied
and applied for removal of other dyes and chemicals from textile industry. Industries other than
textile producing similar waste water (dyes, color) may use it with small modification.
