MUSIC FOR LIFE

Por Ranulfo Pedreiro (jornalista/assessoria de imprensa)

Luciana Schmidt dos Santos (professora Suzuki de flauta doce)

A musical adventure guided the students’ emotions during the IV Marathon Flute and
Bellows and led them to four different universes, each one with its own and surprising
characteristics.

Inspired by the Suzuki Philosophy, which introduces musical practice into everyday
habits, the Marathon provided an unforgettable series of concerts in Londrina,
bringing its students near to experienced musicians in different styles and sounds.

There is a lot to learn from these presentations. From the small details that happen on
the stage, where the musicians have their own and discreet language, even dealing
with personal issues such as anxiety and insecurity. If it wasn’t enough, there is still
the meeting of different generations, different ways of playing and thinking music –
and the life. In fact, there are so many benefits that they become quite difficult to be
measured.
After all, a presentation
demands contact, exchange,
reciprocity, donation,
dedication, collectiveness,
attention, study, practice and a
series of attributes which are
developed during the
rehearsals and the classes
which go beyond the music,
strengthening the bases to the
individual development.
The first concert of this phase of immersion through the stages had the participation of Kiko
Jozzolino , André Siqueira and Santos’ family which is formed by Luciana Schmidt ( soprano
recorder), Miguel Santos (accordion), Giovana Schmidt dos Santos ( voice), Gabriel Schmidt
dos Santos ( drums and accordion) and Fernando Ishida ( keyboard) - it happened at Cultural
Hall on February 16th. Recorders and accordions were combined with electric guitars, guitars
and amplified violas, bringing compositions of André Siqueira and Kiko Jozzolino – as well as
the themes used by the Suzuki Method - to improvisation’s area, jazz, blues and Brazilian
music that say a lot about ourselves, and perhaps because of this we get deeply thrilled. The
students and the veterans were integrated by generosity, and as a consequence the mutual
respect was established full of emotions.
With the Camerata Café, on February
22nd having the historical museum,as a
scenery, with its thick walls, full of
references to other times, when the
train was the most useful transportation
in this city which was built in the red
land. The repertoire, also historical,
brought themes for more than a century
– and they were still able to show their
value. The instrumentation, from that
period, had the participation of Elimar
Plínio Machado (viola of gamba),Luciana
Schmidt (recorder), Gislaine Mafra (
harpsichord), Arthur Alves ( cello),
Daniel Sebrian ( baroque guitar ) and
Guilherme Aroceno ( percussion).
Without microphones and comfortably
accommodated in their own
environment, the recorders sounded
natural and enduring, surrounded by
cares and finesse. It was a concert full of
meanings and discoveries, a walk
through the past that was able to
dialogue with the present.
Then the tension filled with timbre came, combining Astor Piazzolla’s tango and Gerry
Mulligan’s jazz from the Septeto Reunion, which hosted the students from the Marathon on
March 29th at Cultural Hall. With exclusive arrangements written by Vitor Gorni (sax
baritone) the band had the participation of other musicians, Arthur Alves (cello), Miguel
Santos (accordion), Gabriel Zara (bass), Mateus Gonsales (piano), Gilson Corsaletti (drums)
and José Marcello Casagrande (vibraphone). The repertoire went to the limits of jazz, tango
and erudite music, with intense dynamics, rhythmic inversions and typical euphoria of the
passion that moved Piazzolla. It was a unique experience, where listening and playing had
the same importance.
The closing ceremony was held on March 31st at the Crystal Theater, with the Caviúna
group, formed by Rafael Rosa (guitar), Miguel Santos (accordion), Antonio Vianna
(zabumba), Caetano Vasconcelos (triangle) and a special participation of Carlos Pereira (
tambourine). At this time, the accordion was on its natural environment. But, the
recorders were not displaced, because there was a natural approach with the fife and
the modal music European heritage. The arrangements written by Miguel Santos made
creative approaches between folk themes of different countries and the Brazilian music.
Paying tribute to Jackson do Pandeiro, the concert was relaxing and involved the
audience, who danced in front of the stage, in a typical and necessary interaction with
the forró, a style which is able to narrow the distance between the musicians and the
audience. The show had also the participation of Natália Lopes, a sign – language
interpreter.
The four concerts had a lot in common, although they presented different
styles and stages. Among them, the live and true music made to reach the
deepness of the soul and provoke good feelings, raising essential issues of
existence and building a more harmonious and tolerant future.
