GETTING YOUR INSTRUMENT and/or SUPPLIES:

Keller ISD has a long history of outstanding bands and we look forward to joining these outstanding students in a
positively life changing musical adventure! The Keller ISD directors have done extensive research to pick out
instruments and accessories to make each child have the highest chance of success. Please see our handout for a list
of music companies where you can secure your supplies for band!
On a personal note: Please do not let money stop a student from joining band! We are passionate about exposing
students to the wonderful world of band and are willing to do whatever it takes to help a highly motivated child
become a part of our band family. If the music stores cannot work out a payment plan that works for you, or if any
other special arrangement that needs to happen, please contact us directly. Ask us – we can help!

CLARINET
Recommended Instrument:

Clarinets are arguably the most difficult instruments to get to sound identical to each other in a band
setting. Because of this major factor, it is absolutely essential that ANY VARIATION of instrument or
mouthpiece choice must be approved by the band directors BEFORE the rental or purchase of an
instrument. Any variation approved must be made of wood. Plastic just cannot produce the correct sound
for a child’s success.
Required accessories: (Reeds will have to be purchased throughout the year.)

• BG Revelation ligature (holds reed on the mouthpiece)
• Clarinet reed guard (holds and protects 4 reeds to help them last longer)
• Reserve Classic #2 ½ strength reeds
• Mouthpiece teeth patch (to help with stability and comfort while playing)

OBOE KIT
The school provides this instrument for a rental/maintenance fee of $100.00
a school year. This payment will be made to KISD at the start of the school year
during the month of September.
You will need to purchase the following from a music store.

• Oboe reed case (holds 4 reeds)
• 4 Medium-Soft oboe reeds*
(Recommended reed brands are: Miller Select Reserve, Singin’ Dog and Infinity)

*A Note about Reeds: Check with your music store to make sure you buy handmade reeds. They produce the best
sound and set up the students for success. You will need to replenish your supply of reeds as they break or become
old. A properly cared-for reed lasts around a few months. We will teach your child how to properly care for their
reeds so they last as long as possible.

** A “trumpet” is NOT recommended until their physical characteristics have matured to be able to hold
the instrument and support its larger volume of air needs. If you do want to begin on a trumpet, it makes
more financial sense to NOT go with a “beginner or intermediate trumpet”. They will outgrow it within a
year, so be sure to purchase/rent an advanced model trumpet listed above so that they will not outgrow it!
