that: "Whosoever wishes to lead a life like me, die my

planted by my Lord, thcn he should aftcr mc must
befriend Ali and love his heir. Ile must also seek
guidance from my Imams after me for they are my

Muhammad ibn al-QllrZl was asked: "Who was the first
to accept Islam; Ali (A) or Abii Bah?" He replied:
Subtlan Allah! Ali (A) was the first of the two to accept
Islam. This matter confused some people because Ali
(being very young) kept his faith hidden from Abii
Tiilib, whereas Abii Bakr openly declared his Islam. But
according to our belief there could be no doubt that Ali

10
'InUn (faith) of Ali (A) on the other, the 'InUn of Ali
(A) would be heavier in weight."

verse, "Peace be upon Il-Yasin [37:130] means, "Peace
be upon the Family of Muhammad (S)." Furthermore,
Fakhruddin Riizi reported that the Family of the House

(I) In salutation [i.e., May Peace be upon..j. Allah says,
"Peace be upon you, O Prophet," and he says, "Peace be
upon il-Yasin [the Family of Muhammad]". (2) Both

55
are recipient of [salawat] during tashahhud; (3) In
purification, Allah (S) calls Prophet (S) Ta Ha [20:1],
that is, "O the pure one!"; and He says about Ahlul Bayt
(A), "...and he will purify you a great purification!"
j33:33 I. (4) In the prohibition of receiving charity;
Allah says, "Say, I ask nothing from you in return
except loving attachment to the Near Ones." [42:23]. (S)
In love, Allah says, "...follow md Allah will love you."
[3:31].

Razi in Tafsir al-Kabir: At the end of his commentary

on the verse, "And among the People is one who trades
his soul seeking the pleasure of Allah. And Allah is
Compassionate with his servants" [2:207], it is stated
that this verse was revealed about Ali (A). He spent the
night on the bed of the Messenger of Allah (S) when he
left [Makkah] for the cave. And it is narrated that while
he slept on his bed, JibrSil stood by his head and
Mikii'il by his feet. And Jibrii'il called out, "Bravo!
Well Done, O Ali ibn Abi jUilib! Allah has made the

Arias ibn Malik said that the Prophet sent Abii Baler
along with Siirah BaU'at. to recite before the infidels but
called him back before he could deliver it. Then the
Prophet said that it was not proper for an one other than
the one who belonged to his family to take the Siirah.
After that he called on Ali and handed him the Siirah.

It has also been narrated by NisWi in his book Khasa'is

and by Ajimed ibn Hanbal in his book Musnad and by

he knows better.' The man replied, 'O Chief of the
Believersl Your answer is more beloved to me than the
answer of Ali (A).' MuZiwiyah replied, 'What a
miserable thing you have said! You dislike a man in
whom the Messenger of Nlah (S) endowed knowledge
in immense abundance. He surely told him, 'You are to
me as Harlin is to Miisa except that there is no prophet
after me."'

Mustadrak as-Salnhayn: Abii Sa'id reported: "We were
with the Messenger of Allah (S) when his sandal broke.
Ali (A) took it upon himself to fix it. Then the Prophet
(S) walked a little and said, 'among you is one who will
fight for the correct interpretation of the QurUin just as i
have fought for its revelation.' Everyone in the crowd
sought this honor, including Abil Baler and Umar. 'Is it
me?' asked Abu Bakr. 'No,' the Prophet (S) replied. 'Is
it me?' asked Umar. He replied, 'No, but the one who
fixed my sandals.' So we came up to Ali and
congratulated him, but he did not lift his head. It was as
though hc had alrcady hcard this from thc Mcsscngcr of
Allah (S)."'
