    Ancient Egypt lasted over 3,000 years and though it began over 5,000 years ago, much is still known about its civilization. The Egyptians were among the first to develop a system of writing called hieroglyphs to record events. They also built magnificent temples which they saw as homes for the gods, with tall stone pillars and heavy roofs, such as the temple of Abu Simbel with its four huge statues of Pharaoh Ramses II.

    The History of Egypt
    The ancient Egyptian civilization lasted for more than
    3000 years. Although we are talking about a period that
    began more than 5000 years ago, we know a great deal
    about ancient Egypt. How can we know about people
    who lived so long ago?

    The ancient Egyptians were among the first people
    to develop a system of writing. They believed it was
    important to write down what was happening.

    The Temples
    The Egyptians also built magnificent temples, which they
    believed were the homes of the gods and goddesses.

    The temples were filled with high stone pillars which
    supported a heavy stone roof.

    The temple at Abu Simbel has four huge statues of the
    Pharaoh Ramses the Second, 20 meters high, wearing
    the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt.
