talcum powder with pepperlike odor
SECTION IV - FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA
FLASH POINT (METHOD USED): 386 DEG F (197 DEG C) (unknown)
AUTOIGNITION TEMPERATURE: 1202 to 1292 DEG F (650 to 700 DEG C)
EXPLOSIVE CONCENTRATION: 0.025 g/1 (Dust)
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Water, fog, foam, CO2
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Wear full protective clothing. Contami-
nated clothing should be removed and decontaminated immediately.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: HCN AND HCl may be present.
SECTION V - HEALTH HAZARD DATA
0.4 mg/m3 (0.05 ppm)
THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUE,
IDLH CONCENTRATION: 2 mg/m3
EFFECTS OVEREXPOSURE: CS acts directly on the mucous membranes to produce
irritation, burning, and pain in the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory
tract. ‘The action’ on the eyes also causes lacrimation (tear flow), blepha-
rospaam (tightly closed eyelids), and conjunctivitis (redness of the eyes)
cs is a pulmonary irritant affecting the air passages and lungs causing
sneezing, coughing, salivation, congestion of the nose wall of the pharynx,
and a feeling of suffocation. These effects occur immediately and will
persist 5-20 minutes after removal from the contaminated atmosphere. Skin
Sensitization can occur in some persons exposed to CS. Prolonged or re-
peated contact with CS can cause erythema, vesiculation, first degree, and
possibly second degree burns in sensitive people. Elevated environmental
Eemperatures, high relative humidity, and friction of CS with the skin may
contribute to skin damage.Deaths in laboratory animals exposed to CS appears to result from the poor
transfer of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream, probably caused by the
edema, hemorrhage in the lung, and destruction in the air passages. CS has
the following toxicities:
LD50 (intragastric, rat) = 822 mg/kg
LD50 (intragastric, rabbit) = 401 ng/kg
Lets0 (inhalation, rat) = 32,293 mg-min/m3 (molten CS)
Lets0 (inhalation, guinea pig) = 8,410 mg-min/m3 (molten CS)
Lct50 (inhalation, monkey) = 50,089 mg-min/m3 (molten CS)
Lets (inhalation, rat) = 94,378 mg-min/m3 (from M7A3 grenade)
L¢ts0 (inhalation, guinea pig) = 65,573 mg-min/m3 (from M7A3 grenade)
L¢50 (aquatic, mummichog) = 3.9 mg/1
The ICtS0 (concentration x time of exposure that will incapacitate 50% of an
exposed population) is 0.1 - 10 mg-min/m3.
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION. Remove victim to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give
artificial respiration. If chest tightness, shortness of breath, chest pain
Sr cough persist for more than 5 minutes, seek medical attention immediate-
ly
EYE AND SKIN CONTACT. Remove victim to fresh air. Flush eyes and skin with
copious amounts of water for 15 minutes. DO NOT rub the eyes or skin. Seek
medical attention. NOTE: The water will produce a burning sensation on the
skin, lasting about 5 minutes.
INGESTION. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY. Gastric lavage and hospita-
lization will usually be required.
SECTION VI -
REACTIVITY DATA
STABILITY: Stable.
CONDITIONS TO AVOID: None known.
INCOMPATIBILITY: Chlorinating/oxygenating bleaches.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Thermal decomposition of CS will produce
HCN, C2H2, HCl, NOx, CO, COCL2, N20 and chlorobenzene. Hydrolysis will
produce o-chlorobenzaldehyde and malono-nitrile. Malononitrile can hydro-
lyze to produce CN- and thiocyanate
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur.
SECTION VII - SPILL, LEAK, AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: Persons involved
in clean-up operations using these procedures should wear a chemical face-
shield, goggles, rubber boots, gloves and apron and respiratory protection
(Section 8). The spilled CS should be covered with sand, gathered up, and
placed in a fully removable head drum. The contaminated surface should
be decontaminated using (a) a solution of equal parts (by volume) metha-
nol and water with 1@ percent (by weight) sodium hydroxide or commerc-ial
lye added to the solution or (b) an aqueous solution containing 10%
