Coating Innovations

Evonik offers Intelligent and Innovative Solutions for the

Paints, Coatings, Printing Inks, and Adhesives Industries.
For the paints and coatings market, Evonik has for
many years used the Smart Formulating concept,
which represents the promise that it will work closely
with its customers in arriving at innovative, effective,
and individual solutions for the formulation of
advanced paint and coating systems. Since 2005,
the presentation of the system solutions offered has
developed into a customer-oriented categorization of
coatings components. It has proven useful to group
the system solutions offered into the following six
coatings components:

•  Additives
•  Crosslinkers
•  Coloring
•  Matting
•  Resin Components
•  Resins

Evonik offers full service and support for all pro-
ducts worldwide. Detailed information is available at
www.smartformulating.com.

Innovative topics
The Smart Formulating Journal informs coatings cus-
tomers in depth about the innovative strength and the
broad-based problem-solving expertise of the entire
company. Contributions from all the business units
active in the coatings market focus on interesting and
innovative topics. New developments are presented in
the form of technical articles. The Smart Formulating
Journal is an industry-specific periodical and appears
in a number of languages.

Additives

Besides binders, pigments and solvents, coatings and inks in the

majority of cases also contain additives.

Additives are used to prevent defects or to achieve special proper-

ties in coatings. It is almost impossible to obtain these properties
using other raw materials. Additives have the reputation of
“problem solvers” and “property enhancers” and nowadays are
regularly used in all coatings formulations. They play a key role
in the development of new coating systems and their importance
is steadily growing as a result of higher quality standards and the
switch to environmentally friendly formulations. More and more
additives are the components that determine whether a coating is
marketable or not. In the majority of cases, additives are responsi-
ble for important properties such as gloss, color stability, adhesion
or a smooth surface.

With innovative products Evonik offers a wide range of tailor-

made “problem solvers” for the coatings and printing inks industry.
The product range of Evonik embraces defoamers, deaerators,
wetting and dispersing additives, surface control additives, substrate
wetting additives, radiation-curing additives, rheological additives,
adhesion promoters, hydrophobing agents, anti-settling agents,
anti-oxidants as well as different kinds of resins.

high-performance, innovative color system solutions for the archi-
tectural and industrial paint and coatings industry.

Offering a broad range of universal and waterborne colorants for

point-of-sale and in-plant tinting of architectural paints, Evonik
was first to commercially introduce no VOC and APE-free colo-
rants for use in formulating environmentally-friendly coatings.

With the introduction of COLORTREND® 808 no VOC colorants,

transitioning to environmentally-friendly point-of-sale color sys-
tems has never been easier. Developed to have minimal impact

Matting

ACEMATT® matting agents from Evonik can alter the surface in

such a way that the light is scattered in a defined fashion. The
matting agent particle stands out from the paint invisible to the
human eye. Neither the color of the paint nor the base (in the
case of clear coating) is changed to any great extent. For the coat-
ings industry, Evonik offers various matting agents which have
carried the trade name ACEMATT® since 1995. Fundamental
requirements for matting agents are: ready dispersibility, good
suspension behavior, little influence on rheological properties and
high transparency of the matted coatings. Evonik offers thermal
silica, untreated and surface-treated precipitated silica for various
applications.

Recently a new one-shot matting technology for exterior durable

powder coatings was developed by Evonik: PUR powder coatings
are also perfectly adjusted to low gloss levels by addition of
VESTAGON® EP-R 4030, a crystalline polyester resin.

Silk matt effects in waterborne, solventborne and in powder

coatings are achieved by adding a micronized wax of the VESTO-
