List any volunteer, extracurricular activities, or work experience in which you are or have been

involved in the past two years.

- I have volunteered for Sophia Salvin Special Education by helping kids with disabilities. I
helped disabled people in the Reel Abilities Festival. Another example of my work
experience is when I participated in an internship in a program with the Youth Policy
Institute. I originally applied to earn money and support my parents financially. But later,
I learned to love the work. My main responsibility was to help people at my school. The
internship is about training with police officers and working with them. Due to many
applicants for the internship it didn’t go through, but that was the closest I’ve had to work
experience.

Why would you like to attend college? Discuss your career and personal goals. Are there any
particular circumstances, school experiences, or persons that influenced your preparation or
motivation to attend college (eg., cultural/financial background, family, teachers, schools you
attend? Please explain
- I would love to attend college. I know it is a great opportunity and I would like to go
through that experience because I want a better and brighter future. I will be the first to
attend a university in my family if I am giving the chance to do so. I want to make my
family proud. I want to major in criminal justice because I find this career interesting and
like to make a career in this field. I participated in a summer internship with the Youth
Policy Institute on law enforcement. I attended meetings where the police officers attend
and talked to us about the criminal justice programs. Through this internship, I became
interested in majoring in criminal justice and I was motivated to apply to college. My
family are my biggest motivation to attend college because they want me to succeed in
life. I will be the first in my family to attend college and that has been my motivation to
get good grades in high school . I want to be a role model in my community and
demonstrate that pursuing a higher education is a possibility despite our financial
struggles.

Briefly discuss your academic background. Did you utilize any additional support at your high
school, such as tutoring? Do your grades in high school and/or college reflect your academic
ability or potential?
- Growing up in a rough neighborhood surrounded by more bad influences than good has
compelled me to make some poor choices in the beginning of high school. Throughout
my freshman and sophomore year, I struggled. However, this brief moment in my life
does not define me and it does not reflect of my potential. I know I am better than what
my grades show. For that reason I have been able to get my grades up. I have asked
questions when needed, I’ve attend tutoring and anything to help me when am feeling
lost. Even though there is not enough support at school sometimes, I have to figure
things out on my own and be independent to get my things done.

Briefly describe your family’s economic background. Include information about your financial
challenges.
- I grew up in a low-income community where we had financial struggles. My dad is the
main source of income in our family with five people in our household. My mother is a
stay home wife due to my little brother suffering Intractable epilepsy, Global
developmental delay, and Severe Intellectual Disabilities. We have had a lot of external
costs due to my brothers illness and have had to live on a budget all my life. We don’t go
out alot as a family or get luxuries as we would like. Although, we were really limited on
our personal expenses, I am grateful for always having food on our table. It may be the
simplest food from beans and rice, but it’s never missing. A financial challenge has been
not being able to buy new clothes or shoes due to my dad being the only one who
works. This is one of the motivations that has me working hard for a better future.

Please tell us more about yourself. Is there any additional information you would like EOP to
consider in determining your admission to the program?
- I am a shy but brave person. I would love to be part of EOP because I need the
guidance and help. I am taking this very serious and I don’t want to fail. I consider myself
a risk taker. I will get through it. I have heard great things about EOP. I also have seen
statistics that first year students who are involved in a program like EOP are more likely
to graduate than students who aren’t.
