Thao Nguyen: Good morning, welcome to Ban Mai News. I’m Thao Nguyen and our main
story today comes from Snada Village.
The households in this village have been living next to a landfill for many years. This has
caused a big problem for the local residents as they’ve been suffering from flies, and I mean,
a lot of flies. The flies are everywhere and are interfering with people’s daily lives. Fly traps
and other measures have so far been ineffective. The struggle is real.

We’ll now turn to our reporter Yen Nhi, reporting live from Snada Village.
- Hello, Yen Nhi? How are you doing up there?
- I’m doing alright. I just got here.
- So how bad is the problem there?
- Oh I have to say it’s really bad. The landfill is huge and very smelly. Trucks from the
inner city of Hanoi dump tons of garbage there every day. And this place has
attracted millions of flies.
Video:
- Narrator: Mr. Bieber’s house is about 300 meters away from the landfill and is even
separated by a river, has been flooded with flies for the past 10 days. Fly traps and
sprays can’t really do much. And he is not the only victim. Hundreds of other
households in the area are also suffering from the same problem.
- Mr. Bieber: Oh my gosh, flies are everywhere. After setting the table, we can’t even
eat. We feel helpless because we can’t do anything about it. Living with these flies is
unbearable. We can’t live like this.
- Narrator: The abundance of flies has a negative effect on not only people’s health
but also their income.
- Mr Stark: When my children are playing with their toys, there are many flies around
them and sometimes, they put the flies into their mouths. My coffee shop has been
doing really badly. When I put the drink on the table, lots of flies immediately land
on the drink. Customers freak out and run away. I’ve just closed the coffee shop.
- Mr Rogers: We feel really annoyed. We want to put an end to all this misery. We just
want to live a normal life.
- Narrator: Rainy weather is ideal for fly reproduction. According to the local
authorities, there have been more rainy days recently so there are a lot of flies now.
The local authorities have been trying to resolve the issue but the number of flies
hasn’t stopped growing.
- Guy: Recently, it has started to rain more. And that makes it more difficult for us to
handle the fly problem. We are aware of the local people’s concerns and we’ve been
trying to help them out by spraying around the landfills and behind their houses to
kill and shoo away the flies. We understand the struggles of the local residents and
we promise to to do our best to improve the situation.
Anchor:
- Living near the landfill has brought serious problems to the local residents. A lot of
measures have been taken by both households and authorities but the problem
persists. The people are now desperate for an ultimate solution.

News anchor: Rural waste is a problem for many people in many small villages in Dong
Thap. People there say that the landfill near their homes has been so polluted that it creates
ideal conditions for flies to breed and reproduce. Flies have invaded people’s homes and
affected their health. This situation has been a problem for a long time. Reporting from Dong
Thap, Jim Doe has the story. Jim?

Reporter: Mike Doe’s family lives near the landfill. According to him, during the day, there
are many flies in his house. And they interfere with all day-to-day activities of the family. He
spends more than 20,000 dong a day buying fly traps but they are useless. Let’s hear from
Mike now.

Mike: Before, when there wasn’t a landfill, there were not many flies. But now, when the
wind blows, there is a terrible smell and we have been finding it hard to put up with it. Our
life is so miserable. We demand an immediate solution from the authorities!

News anchor: The landfill was put into use at the end of 2012, with an area of 14,000 square
meters. Every day, there are three trucks of trash dumping more than seven tons. Now Mary,
a resident of Ba La Village in Dong Thap, will share her experience.

Mary: When I have dinner, breakfast or lunch, I need to chase the flies away otherwise I
won’t be able to eat. But the flies are abundant so I can’t get rid of all of them! I can not
enjoy my meals anymore! When I try to sleep, the flies land on my body so I have been
suffering from insomnia. The flies have been driving me nuts!

News anchor: Residents of 8 villages in Dong Thap are crying for help. It’s time for the local
authorities to take action to improve the people’s quality of life.
SCRIPT 3:

Anchor: Living right next to the Xuan Son garbage disposal area, a lot of people are now
suffering from a serious fly epidemic. When they wake up, the first things they see are flies.
Flies are everywhere and they are becoming a daily nuisance for the local households.
In fact, most of the houses in that area are subject to land expropriation and house owners
should have received compensation to relocate. However, so far, no family has been
compensated and so they can’t afford to move.

What you’re seeing now is what’s been happening on a daily basis to dozens of households
near Xuan Son garbage disposal area. They have to put up mosquito nets when they want to
have meals because eating outside the net would mean that hundreds of flies will
immediately swarm into the room and land on the food. Let’s hear what Ms. Ngô, a villager,
has to say about this.

Ms Ngo – Basically, we always eat inside the net. And most of the time, even when we are
not eating, we prefer to stay inside the net so we don’t have to deal with flies.

Narrator: And now let’s move to Ms Phong’s house. Even though she puts covers everywhere
around the house, she still needs to spend at least 100,000 dong each month on fly traps and
sprays. And yet, the house keeps getting infested by flies. Fly traps set up in the kitchen are
quickly filled with flies after just a few hours. Ms Phong broke down in tears when sharing
with us her experience living with flies.
Ms Phong – Each and every day we suffer the infestation of flies. This is too much for us. We
adults can at least try to put up with it but I hate it when my kids suffer too! This problem has
taken its toll on our children. They often have diarrhea and digestive problems. I can’t live
like this any longer.

Narrator: Locals call this place The Mountain. Having to live near this Mountain has not been
a pleasant experience for them. The disagreement on the level of compensation hasn’t been
resolved and so, they are still stuck in this miserable situation.

Mr. Blah Blah: At first, the authorities only wanted to give us 10k for one square meter. We
sued them and the court demanded them to increase the amount of compensation to 50k for
one square meter. The court ordered them to pay us immediately but we haven’t received a
penny from them! We shouldn’t have to put up with this! Living here will bring us a lot of
diseases and we want to move on ASAP!

Anchor: And that wraps up today’s breaking news. Thank you for your time and join us again
at 11 tonight. Have a good day!
