Sample Lesson Plan for Sets and Venn Diagrams

Teachers: Subject:
Keelin Wiley, Stevie Vines, and Meredith Knox Sets and Venn Diagrams
Standard:
 Grade 8 (2) Number and Operations
(A) extend previous knowledge of sets and subsets using visual representation such as a Venn
diagram to describe relationships between sets of real numbers;
Objective (Explicit):
 Today, we will be able to identify set relationships by using Venn diagrams.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
 The students are able to represent sets using Venn diagrams and identify relationships in
sets. The students are able to read and understand Venn diagrams. (90%)
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
 Students will review Key Vocabulary
 Identify elements within a set
 Organize sets into Venn diagrams
 Identify set relationships
 Identify intersections, unions, subsets, disjoints, empty sets, and equal sets
 Answer questions using a Venn diagram
 Develop Venn diagrams to solve word problems

Key vocabulary: Materials:

 Sets  Paper
 Elements  Pipe cleaners
 Venn Diagrams  Baggie with Element number cards
 Disjoint, Subsets, Equal, Empty Sets  Activity sheet
 Intersection (Enough for the class)
 Union
Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
 State what the students will learn: Today, we will expand our knowledge of sets and Venn
diagrams by completing an activity with similar problems like the Prezi presentation reviewed the
day before.
 Review with the students what a set is and what an element is.
 Start by asking the students what months their birthdays are in. Then, create a universal set for
the class birthday months. Next, create two different sets. One being the birthday months for the
girls and the other being the birthday months of the boys.

Closing/Student Reflection/Assessment:
 After students have completed their activity sheet, discuss with students about their findings.
 Handout student worksheets to be completed for homework.
 Students complete a 3-2-1-exit ticket describing three things they learned, two things they want
to know more about, and one they are still confused on.
