proving safety and security in the
maritime industry. He was immersed in the business through the old tradition, where ship-owners would send their children to the families of their shipping friends to learn the trade. This
fostered in Kendall a rare passion for his business.
42nd Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner In 1977, Kendall came to New York to work for the family owned company called Ocean Service Corporation. Early in his career, Kendall worked closely with friends and

Marine Export Lines, Energy Transportation Corporation, and Energy Ammonia Transportation Corporation. In 1978, he joined Energy Transportation Corporation as Co-
Chairmen, then President, and CEO. As CEO of Energy Transportation Corporation, he was responsible for the operation of a fleet of eight American flagged liquid natural gas
(LNG) carriers, which traded between Indonesia and Japan. In 2000, he founded Energy Group Inc., where he served as Chairman.
One of Kendall’s proudest accomplishments was his role in Energy Transportation Corporation’s (ETC) LNG vessels’ efforts in rescuing Vietnamese boat people in the South
China Sea. He worked with the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, and the U.S. Consulate in Osaka to gain the support of the U.S. Government for handling and processing the refugees
once the ETC LNG ships had docked in Japan. He also often visited the UN High Commission for Refugees in Geneva to ensure international support for the efforts. Under
Kendall’s direction, the ETC ships rescued over 2,000 Vietnamese boat people, who would otherwise have perished on the open ocean.
Kendall received an Executive Masters in Business from Harvard University, but his first passion remained ship operation. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the marine
industry all his life. In addition to his position as a Trustee at Seamen’s Church Institute of NY & NJ (1994-2010, currently an Honorary Member), Kendall was also a
longstanding member of the Marine Society of New York (1998-2018), a member of the American Bureau of Shipping (1994-2018, serving part of that time on the Board), and a
Trustee of Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport (2009-2017). Further, he was a Board Member at the Incarnation Center (2002-2010). Kendall had an outsized persona, with
a presence marked by intelligence, exuberance, kindness, and generosity. He found love at Seamen’s Church Institute of NY & NJ, where he met his wife, fellow Board Member
Gale Rundquist.
