wellbeing of New Zealanders at the heart

This approach is a significant shift from
past Budgets. We are now measuring our

of just relying on our Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) or the fiscal surplus as a

a $9.4 million Budget boost, following
on from a $1.8 million injection after the
Christchurch attacks.

World Yoga Day
Gearing up for Yogathon – Health for Humanity 2019
Yogathon - Health for Humanity event is
returning to New Zealand cities and towns
this June from Saturday 15th until Friday
28th. Yogathon launch events will take
place simultaneously in cities all around
the country.
This year’s Yogathon will incorporate the
International Day of Yoga which takes
place annually on Friday 21st June when
the entire world joins in celebrating the
harmony between man and nature.
For International Yoga Day, the Hindu
Council of New Zealand is collaborating
with the Yoga Education in Prisons
Trust to present 108 Surya Namaskara in
Wellington’s Civic Square from 12.30 pm
to 1.30 pm.
Please note that this portion of the
Yogathon is a fundraiser for Yoga
Education in Prisons Trust who provide
Yoga and meditation classes and courses
for prisoners.
People from all walks of life and different
age groups are welcomed to join the two-

LVR Restrictions to remain, KiwiBuild
continues to Fall Short of Projections
The Reserve bank has announced that loan
to value restrictions will remain at the
current levels as of now. Housing Minister
Phil Twyford is feeling the heat as the

The Reserve Bank announced in its latest

indebtedness". The LVR rules were loosened
in January where banks are able to provide
20% of their owner-occupier loans to
borrowers with a deposit of less than 20%.

investor loans to borrowers with less than a
30% deposit.
The loosening of LVR’s along with OCR
being lowered has led to a sustained period
of historically low mortgage rates – and
many experts expect these low mortgage

is the real estate market heading? In
the last three months there have been
some important developments that have
affected the underlying level of strength
in housing markets around New Zealand.
First, interest rates are falling. Back in
February two-year fixed mortgage rates
were typically near 4.3 per cent and
three-year rates 4.5 per cent. Now both
are just below 4 per cent. In Australia, the
United States, United Kingdom, European
Union, and here in New Zealand virtually
no one now expects interest rates to rise
this year. Talk is of cuts, including maybe
one more in New Zealand to follow the
May 8 reduction. Expectations of such
reductions have pushed bank funding
costs lower and this has caused mortgage
rates to be cut.
Second, net migration flows for New
Zealand have reversed. These flows are
hugely important for Auckland but less
so, for the rest of the country. In the year
to mid-2016, net annual flows peaked at
64,000. They then fell away to 50,000 in
the first half of last year. Now the flow
is back to 62,000 (subject to revisions,
which have been large in recent months).
This is not a migration boom, but it does
strip away earlier expectations of housing
market restraint from slowing population
growth.

be completed by July 1, below the previously
announced 300 – which was already scaled
back from the original 1000 forecast for
completion.

conference that the government is expecting
to complete just 1500 homes by July 1, 2020,
which is also significantly down from the

Azrim: R-e-tail-ing with Purpose

Last week, a post on LinkedIn caught my
eye, announcing that the brand Azrim had
re-launched their website to cater to the
growing needs of clients, and to combine
their B2B, B2C and Wholesale operations
into one single service platform entity
which was called, B2P or Business to
Purpose. – a unique terminology.
Now, I got an interesting answer when we
contacted the business owner Farrukh
Mirza what B2P means to him. And this
is what he explained, “We want to grow
our market by catering to every customer
there is, focus solely on 'experience'
as the ultimate factor of customer
satisfaction. This is a natural progression
from the classic 4Ps - Product, Place,
Price & Promotion. We have realised that
these parameters no longer influence
the current retail, wholesale and trade
environment. With the internet and social
media - digital environment, we are seeing
consumers make decisions not based on
these above-mentioned 4Ps, but on state-
of-mind as logical, practical, emergency,
emotional and illogical.”
In the past 2 years, businesses are
seeing a shift in consumer attitudes
and behaviour with entry and luxury
market experiencing growth, and the
middle market taking a downturn. This is
reflected in other industries like property,
bigger retail (cars, boats, furniture,
homeware) and even restaurants-cafe,
and is a clear reflection of the spending
habits and change of pattern in priorities
of buying for the wider market. To know
more on the dynamic changes in market
trends and I asked him some more
questions -
How does the experience factor translate
to customer spending?
Farrukh replied, “The entry level or low-
price market has not grown by its own
accord, but many of the middle-market
customers who would generally spend on
above-average to entry-luxury goods have
decided to save on to their money, and
instead spend more on the lower priced

middle market by size and
per customer dollar spend
and will remain so over the
coming 2 - 3 years”.
“But on the luxury end of the
market, quality and brand
value is most important,
and price takes a secondary
position. People who value
craftsmanship and see value

the best. This segment will
continue to grow as the top
5 - 10% have not experienced
a slow-down in their cash
flow or investments as yet,”
he said.
How did you plan ahead for
brand Azrim to keep on top of
its competitors?
We saw these trends
approaching many years
prior, and read the market
smartly, by bringing in luxury
labels like Ermenegildo
Zegna, Loro Piana, Vitale
Barberis Canonico and
Luciano Barbera from Italy.
They have been loved and
enjoyed by our customers
more, as we are providing these labels
as made-to-measure suits at 30 - 40%

growth in overseas orders from China,
HongKong, India, Iran and UAE. We have
seen a growth in orders locally, NZ, UK,

What is the sector that you think will grow
fastest in terms of spending patterns?
Farrukh replied, “In 2018, we decided

babies, boys and girls aged 0 - 11Y as our
key market. Since the decline in Baby

have noticed significant movement in this

Greatest Girmit Historian, banned from Fiji, awarded
with Fiji Girmit Legacy Award in Auckland

Fiji’s Prime Minister has made
outstanding speeches during 140th
Girmit Anniversary. Very commendable.
However, there remains a huge blackspot,
and an act of betrayal that appear to
border on vindictiveness. And that is ban
on Professor Brij Lal to Fiji.
Those Girmit speeches would will
continue sounding hollow and pointless,
bordering on hypocrisy unless Fiji
Government adopts attitude of humility,
humbleness and forgiveness by allowing
Fiji’s most celebrated historian son,
Professor Brij Vilash Lal (and his good
wife) back into the country of his birth
which he placed on international spheres
through his excellent research and
commentary on Fiji’s Girmit history.
And that greatest Fiji Historian was
awarded Girmit legacy Award in
Literature, Sahitya Ratan by Fiji Girmit
Foundation of New Zealand at 140th
Girmit Thanksgiving Day in Auckland
on 10 May 2019. This was a day before
Bainimarama gave his illustrious speech
on Girmit in Fiji. Extremely commendable,
but all will come to naught unless this
great Girmit contributor is allowed back
into his country of birth.
And, as the Foundation request is pending
with Fiji Government, TO ALLOW 14 MAY
AS GIRMIT THANKSGIVING DAY PUBLIC
HOLIDAY in Fiji. While we await humane
gesture on Girmit by Bainimarama,
nevertheless, Girmit Foundation in New
Zealand commenced recognising Girmit’ s
outstanding children.

decided to introduce Girmit Legacy
Awards because there has been no such
recognition for Fiji Indians overseas who
tended to get statistically diluted and lost
in “Indian” and “Asian “categories.
Therefore, only a Girmit (indenture)
organisation, vested with taking care
of Fiji Indians could really appreciate,

value and recognise their gems. Therefore
Girmit Legacy Awards are there to
recognize the achievements of the
descendants of Girmitiyas for bringing
pride, joy, sense of belonging and social
cohesion to what Girmitiyas have
bequeathed us: A distinct Fiji Indian race,
with a distinct language, culture and
attachment to Fiji - and while rooted in
India, being a distinct Pacifica people.
The Chief Guest for Girmit Thanksgiving
in Auckland, a Girmitiya son, New
Zealand’s former Governor General, Sir
Anand Satyanand, observed the enigma of
Indian heritage:
Guyanian, Sir Sridath (Sonny) Ramphal,
erstwhile Secretary-General of the
Commonwealth, described Indian cultural
heritage, in his own instance as being
like a seed from a tree growing in India
being taken across the seas and growing
with encouragement from a seed again
to flower in the Caribbean – that is, being
different but maintaining the essence of
Indian origin.
Same applies to Fiji Indians who were
honoured. A seed from India, flowering
in Fiji, and taken to other countries,
maintaining the essence of Indian origin,
but still being a Fijian.
What Girmitiyas have done is to give us
a rich and inspiring legacy. And through
that Fiji has produced outstanding people
that have become role models to inspire
others and ensure the hard work, spirit,
values, and legacy of Girmitiyas continue
to live in action every day. And when we
speak of such legacy left by Girmitiyas
in keeping their history alive, one name
comes to our mind.
When talking about promotion of Hindi
Language through Ramayan, we sing: sach
mano Tulsi na hote toh Hindi kahin padi
hoti. If it wasn’t for Tulsidas in promoting
Hindi through Ramayan, the language
may have been lost.
Similarly, when speaking about Girmit
(Indenture) history, we can say:
Sach mano yeh Professor na hote toh
Girmit ki itihas kahi chipi hoti. If we did
not have this Professor, History of Fiji
Girmit would still be missing from history
books.
Yes, and that Professor is a simple, short
person, but of very high stature, Professor
Brij Vilash Lal from Labasa, Fiji (now
Brisbane, Australia). He was announced as
recipient of Girmit Legacy Award 2019 in
the Literature Category – Girmit Sahitya
Ratn. (Professional Wellington A League
Footballer, Roy Krishna received sports
award-story to follow)
Professor Lal’s Award citation read:
“Girmit is our foundational history, which
was gradually being lost with the passage
of time. However, had it not been for
Professor Brij Vilash Lal – a descendant
of the Girmitiyas – the very words ‘Girmit’
and ‘Girmitiya’ would have been lost
forever.
In fact, there was a real danger of us losing
the entire Girmit history, had it not been
for Professor Brij Lal, a world-renowned
scholar on Pacific and Girmit history who
single-handedly retrieved and restored
our foundational history. He removed the
stain linked to the words “Girmit” and
“Girmitiya” and turned them into jewels of
our history that we have come to treasure
and embrace.
Professor Lal’s work spanned various
disciplines – from history, biography to
political commentaries and compiling an
encyclopedia. He is regarded by his peers
as the most eminent scholar in the school
of humanities and social sciences Fiji has
ever produced and remains one of the
most highly acclaimed intellectuals of Fiji
- a proud descendant of the Girmitiyas.
Professor Lal makes us, the descendants
of the Girmitiyas, very proud through his
achievements. His most memorable quip,
which is fondly quoted is: “The Girmitiyas
were ordinary people, who achieved

extraordinary feats in extraordinary
circumstances.”
What Professor Lal has achieved through
his writings is to give voiceless people
a voice, place and purpose, a sense of
dignity and inner strength that comes
from never giving up no matter how
difficult the circumstances.
He strongly believes that history belongs
to the victor as much as it belongs to the
vanquished. And through his scholarship,
initiative and sacrifice he has filled the
blank pages of our Girmit history.
He is author of some 40 book now, if not
exceeding this number. For such a long
list of achievements, we concede that
no award is adequate to truly reflect the
depth of our appreciation.”
Indeed, Professor Lal, in his long and
illustrious academic career, would have
received many, many awards, recognitions
and commendations for his excellence in
his field from many sources.
But this is unprecedented as it comes
from his own people, and from an
organisation, Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ,
which represents people he has given a
name – Girmit.
To make it sweeter, he was the Chief
Guest at the Foundation in Auckland in
2014. And Bainimarama can even make
it sweeter by rising up to allow Professor
and his good wife back in Fiji as Fiji’s
140th Anniversary gift to one of Fiji’s most
celebrated Girmit son.
Indeed, it is a pride for him to be honored
by children of Girmit - whose history he
kept alive. It is now left on Fiji government
honour the son who kept alive the
memories, and feats of Girmitiyas.

Huawei willing to sign 'no-spy agreement'

In response to years of allegations by the
United States and its allies that Huawei's
products could be accessed by Chinese
Intelligence Agencies for spying, the
company said on Tuesday that it is willing
to sign a "no-spy agreement" with the US
government if the opportunity opens up.
"We are willing to sign a no-spy agreement
with the U.S.," The Hill quoted Huawei's
Chairman Liang Hua, as saying. "The U.S.
has not bought from us, is not buying
from us and doesn't have plans to buy
from us. So, I don't know if there's an
opportunity to sign such an agreement."
The Chinese tech giant has offered similar
agreements to the UK and Germany, in
