The Computer Hardware Servicing NC II program is a vocational program that teaches students how to install,
configure and maintain computer systems and networks. It develops students’ skills in diagnosis and
troubleshooting of computer systems, as well as in the performance of computer operations.
The program enhances a student’s ability in basic computer application programs, MS-DOS/ Windows and
Linux installation and PC software and hardware support. Also covered in the program are simple
programming and creation of budget projections based on departmental needs.
Computer hardware servicing jobs are considered professions, because they require a specialized set of skills
and is some cases they require a TESDA certificate. A specialization in Computer Hardware Servicing,
combined with a certificate and/or professional experience, makes one a professional in this field. Common
careers include working as a Computer Service Technician, Computer Network Serviceman and Peripheral
Service Technician.
What skills, traits and attitude will help you succeed in this course?
o Strong Technical Skills – the knowledge and ability to learn, operate and control properly and safely an extensive
range of equipment, tools and systems used in the field.
o Computer Literacy – basic knowledge of computer use and being able to understand application software and
systems
o Logical skills – the ability to determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and
the environment will affect outcomes
o Problem solving skills – the ability to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate
options and implement solutions.
o Observation skills – the ability to notice and identify even the most minute problems in a system, process or
equipment
o Basic Mathematical skills – since there are basic programming concepts included in the study, you need to have
basic math to surpass lessons
o Patience – during practicum exercises, you will not always be able to identify and fix the problem on a computer,
system and parts right away so you have to extend your patience and continue working.
The challenging part of the program is studying the core competencies because the topics involved are the technical
parts of Computer Hardware Servicing. For students who have minimal or no background with computers and computer
systems, this program may be a little difficult. An interest and understanding of computers is helpful but repeated
practice and studying will really help a trainee learn the ins and outs of Computer Hardware Servicing.
One of the greatest advantage of this program which makes it a lot easier for students is that it follows a modular type
of instruction. Modular Instruction is a type of teaching method that follows a specific set of planned learning activities
and exercises. These activities are contained in a short booklet called a module. The Modular form of instruction focuses
on individualized learning, self-pacing and frequent feedback. Because Computer Hardware Servicing NC II follows a
modular type of instruction, students are allowed to proceed with his/her own learning pace (self-pacing). Instructors
provide timely feedbacks allowing students to improve their skills.
The required number of hours for OJT varies from one institution to another.
The Assessment and Certification process is not required among graduates of vocational courses. Graduate trainees
have the option whether to undergo the process or not. However, a TESDA certification will give a graduate an
advantage since local and foreign companies who hire skilled workers require this credential.
Graduates of Computer Hardware Servicing NCII are advised to take and pass the Assessment and Certification Exam,
National Certificate Level II (NC II).
The National Certificate is only valid for five years, which means that it has to be renewed /revalidated. The
requirements and steps in applying for assessment and certification as well as the methods used for assessment are
found in the TESDA website. For those who wish to elevate their qualification level may do so by undergoing the
assessment and certification process for NC III and IV.
