CHAPTER I

Introduction

Science is the concerted human effort to understand, or to understand better, the history

of the natural world and how the natural world works, with observable physical evidence as the

basis of that understanding. It is done through observation of natural phenomena, and/or through

experimentation that tries to simulate natural processes under controlled conditions (Academic

Press Dictionary of Science and Technology). As what we know, Science has changed the world

for good. There have been several scientific inventions from time to time and these have made

life convenient for the human beings. Several of these inventions have become an integral part of

our lives and we cannot imagine our lives without them. Of course, that is why it was

implemented in the educational system to broaden the knowledge of students and invent new

innovative ideas. But does this mean that being proficient in this kind of subject means being

proficient at other school related subjects?

According to Pellegrino (2013), proficiency in Science is being defined through

performance expectations that intertwine science practices, cross- cutting concepts, and core

content knowledge. These descriptions of what it means to know and do Science pose challenges

for assessment design and use, whether at the classroom instructional level or the system level

for monitoring the progress of Science education. But as we know, the Science is intertwined

with Mathematics. From the point of view of the scientist, Mathematics is a tool of Science; from

the point of view of the mathematician, Science is a field for the application of mathematical

truth; from the viewpoint of both, Mathematics is a method of Science. In fact, it may be called

the ultimate method of Science; the more perfectly a Science is developed, the more

mathematical does it become, until it reaches a stage when it is classified as Mathematics

1
(Adsbury, 1905). Beteween the lines said, does this mean that being good at Science also means

being good at Math? Thus, this study is made in order to find the correlation between the two

subjects.

In this study, the researchers hope to find the significant relationship between the two

variables and to be able to develop and contribute reliable information.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to determine if there is a significant relationship of Science proficiency

and the grades in Mathematics. In order to focus the study, the following question are made:

1. Is there a relationship between Science proficiency and grades in Mathematics?

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The main objective of this correlational study was to determine if there is a relationship

between the two variables, Science proficiency and grade in Mathematics on Grade 11 students

of Davao Oriental Regional Science High School. Information collected by this study would

bring opportunities and solutions on problems related to the study and would bring improvement

to the system.

Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant relationship being proficient in Science and the student’s grade in

Mathematics among the Senior High School students in DORSHS.

Ha: There is a significant relationship being proficient in Science and the student’s grade in

Mathematics among the Senior High School students in DORSHS.

2
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The educational significance of this study can provide useful and important information

or data that can define the relationship between the two variables of this study. Furthermore, this

study can help the teachers and the educational system process relevant information in the field

and can derive now techniques that fits the situation.

The target audience of this study is the Grade 11 Senior High School students of

DORSHS.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This study focused on 50 Grade 11 students of Davao Oriental Regional Science High

School and determine the respondents. The respondents was given a questionnaire and was

expected to answer it thoroughly. The weakness of this study is the cooperation need for the

students.
