COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT
Previous Session: Communication

COMMUNICATION

• Communication in Latin is communicare, which means to

share, or to make common.
PROCESS UNDERSTANDING SHARING MEANING
• It is the process of understanding and sharing meaning
that involves interaction between participants.
Eight essential components of communication:
source, message, channel, receiver, feedback,
environment, context, and interference.

Context in Communication

Context is the circumstances surrounding a

message.
Context in Communication
• The context of the communication interaction
involves the setting, scene, and expectations of the
individuals involved.1
Context in Communication
• Context is all about what people expect from each
other, and we often create those expectations out
of environmental cues.2

Communication in Context:
• Each context has an influence on the
communication process.
• Contexts can overlap, creating an even more
dynamic process.
Communication in Context:
Communication contexts include:
• intrapersonal,
• interpersonal,
• group,
• public, and

Communication in Context:
Interpersonal Communication

normally involves two people, and can range from

intimate and very personal to formal and impersonal.
Communication in Context:
Group Communication

• a dynamic process where a small number of people engage in a

conversation.
• generally defined as involving three to eight people. The larger the
group, the more likely it is to break down into smaller groups.
• consider factors like age, education, sex, and location to learn more
about groups and their general preferences as well as dislikes. You
may find several groups within the larger audience, such as specific
areas of education, and use this knowledge to increase your
effectiveness as a communicator.
Communication in Context:
Public Communication

• In public communication, one person speaks to a group of people; the

same is true of public written communication, where one person
writes a message to be read by a small or large group.
• Rules apply
• In a public speaking situation, the group normally defers to the
speaker. For example, the boss speaks to everyone, and the sales
team quietly listens without interruption.
Communication in Context:
Mass Communication
• Mass communication involves sending a
single message to a group
• It allows us to communicate our message to a
large number of people, but we are limited in
our ability to tailor our message to specific
audiences, groups, or individuals.

Mass Communication
Key Takeaway

• Each context has its advantages and disadvantages,

and its appropriate and inappropriate uses.
