Overview Of Industry

About The Industry

Architectural Hardware is a term used for the manufacture and wholesale distributor of items
made from iron, steel, brass, aluminium or other metals, including plastics, for use in all types of
buildings. The Architectural Ironmongery range includes door handles, closers, locks, cylinder
pulls and hinges ("door furniture"), window fittings, cupboard fittings, iron
railings, handrails, balustrades, switches and sockets.

The architectural hardware industry has evolved in over the years. Technology
and its use have increased many folds giving precision to products with quality
and sustenance. Along with the use of technology, design has also evolved
over these years.

Railings that are resourcefully engineered and manufactured with cutting-edge

technology and components are a perfect architectural hardware solution.
They also are one of the most challenging fixtures of a building that require
maintenance. Therefore, there was a need to incorporate technology to create
sturdy and maintenance free hand railing systems.

History
Use of architectural hardware in buildings has a long tradition, with local blacksmiths
producing items for use in houses, churches and other buildings. During the Industrial
Revolution, mass production of ironmongery became more widespread, though
businesses often remained regionally focused. For example, in the UK, Laidlaw was
founded in Manchester in 1876; Derby-based Bennett’s Ironmongery can trace its
history back to 1734; William Tonks & Sons was established in Leeds in 1789; and
Quiggins served the Victorian era Liverpool market. The West Midlands region saw
several well-known businesses established: Parker Winder & Achurch started in
Birmingham in 1836, J Legge in Willenhall in 1881, and William Newton in
Wolverhampton in 1750 (relocating to Birmingham in the 1820s).

After the Second World War, the industry began to consolidate. For example, the
Newton and Tonks businesses merged in 1970, acquired Legge in 1988 and Laidlaw
in 1993, and were then taken over by Ingersoll Rand in 1997, and are today part of
Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, A & H Brass was established in Harrow, North-
West London in 1981 (later relocating to Edgware Road in 1984).

The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers was established in 1961 to promote standards

in the business of architectural ironmongery. It manages an industry accreditation
scheme, GuildMark, and runs an education programme, including a three-year
diploma course and a Registered Architectural Ironmonger (RegAI)

CHAPTER 2
Research Methodology

15
OBJECTIVE & SCOPE OF STUDY

Objective of the Study

The main objective to conduct this research is to understand the hardware market & develop
the architectural hardware positioning for new product launch.

Primary Objective

➢ To study and understand the concept and process of marketing research.

➢ To understand and get the concept of Marketing of hardware products
➢ To get the practical implication of the process involved in any product launch

Role Of Marketing Research

The task of marketing research is to provide management with relevant, accurate, reliable,
valid, and current information. Competitive marketing environment and the ever-increasing
costs attributed to poor decision making require that marketing research provide sound
information. Sound decisions are not based on gut feeling, intuition, or even pure judgment.

Marketing managers make numerous strategic and tactical decisions in the process of
identifying and satisfying customer needs. They make decisions about potential
opportunities, target market selection, market segmentation, planning and implementing
marketing programs, marketing performance, and control. These decisions are complicated
by interactions between the controllable marketing variables of product, pricing, promotion,
and distribution. Further complications are added by uncontrollable environmental factors
such as general economic conditions, technology, public policies and laws, political
environment, competition, and social and cultural changes. Another factor in this mix is the
complexity of consumers. Marketing research helps the marketing manager link the
marketing variables with the environment and the consumers. It helps remove some of the
uncertainty by providing relevant information about the marketing variables, environment,
and consumers.
In the absence of relevant information, consumers' response to marketing programs cannot
be predicted reliably or accurately. Ongoing marketing research programs provide
information on controllable and non-controllable factors and consumers; this information
enhances the effectiveness of decisions made by marketing managers.

16
➢ Need of study

OZONE is a big brand name but the emergence of other market players (Godej etc.) in the
hardware industry, has set a big benchmark and has also affected Ozone market position
adversely. The company has been able to make a huge success in hardware. Customers are
the lifeblood of every business and its success largely depends on how it satisfies its
customers. Customer purchase preferences are affected by a number of reasons. In addition
to this, Location convenience and Dealer relationship is one of the most consideration
followed by the After Sales Services and Variety, in building a good brand image. Both these
concepts have been taken into consideration to study the factors affecting the customer
purchase preference and also the dealers’ perspective to deal with a particular appliance
brand.

Thus this study is aimed to provide the management with some knowledge about its status
in market both in terms of sales and customer awareness. The research also aims to provide
some ideas to improve the company’s present condition

➢ Research objectives
• To identify the factors which have a bearing on customers’ purchase decision
regarding appliances Consumer
• To understand the customers’ outlook towards Ozone Products Survey
• To evaluate the dealer’s motive behind dealing in a particular brand. Dealer
• To study the dealers’ views about Ozone Products. Survey
(a) To identify which appliances are more saleable and which
are less saleable
(b) To identify reasons for low sales of the least saleable appliance
(c) To know the satisfaction level of dealers for OZONE.
(d) To know how Ozone can improve its present position.

17
Scope of the Study

The project scope involves the study of the architectural hardware products of the
industry. Understand the different products category, their mechanism of action
and domestic use of hardware products & their place in modern world. The project
scope also involves the finding of hardware preferences in current area/world
available with the marketing research and developing a hardware market
positioning for industry from the above collected data.

Managerial Usefulness of the Study

This study helps to understand marketing research basic terminologies &

different strategies for different market situation

Types of Research and Research Design

➢ Quantitative Research- The products used in the market are to be

analyzed that what number of products are used in the market and the
numerical data is to be captured and the pivot summary of market share
of ozone overseas is to be made to analyze the today market scenario
of ozone products.

➢ Qualitative Research- The interviews of the persons are taken and the
research has to be made regarding the products use how people react to
products of ozone and the data is to be analyzed how much people liked
or are familiar with the products. How many people know the products
of ozone? The today market is taken into consideration. And the
upcoming projects is to be analyzed also.

18
Research Methodology

 A questionnaire was prepared to gauge the awareness of new product in customer.

 Survey has been done out of the company covering a wide cross-section of the
industry.
 The question was presented in one to one interview with each of the respondents.

 Responses of the concerned persons had been thoroughly analyzed.

 Conclusions had been arrived at using the response of the concerned persons and not
on questionnaire alone.

Generally speaking, persons in modern world are most reserve persons on the planet and they
are not flattered by attention and this sometimes overcomes any inhibitions so that matters
quite secret are paraded before the observer with seeming abandon. At other times, particularly
where an issue has been the subject of recent press attention, the shutters go up and there is
no way in. All you can do in such circumstances is to give up and try something else
likely to be more productive - you haven't the time to spend on lengthy negotiation. Crucial
to the business of initially gaining access is the whole matter of assurances of confidentiality,
anonymity, etc, which I consider below. Your stance, once granted access, depends on how
much of an active participant you want to be in the arena you are observing - the more obviously
committed you are to one particular stance or ideology the more others will take this into
account when revealing their thoughts or their actions to you.

In this context the questionnaire was not a fully fledged one and was made with an intention
of getting the main information as manufacturers don’t have that much time to spare and also a
long questionnaire may irritate them. So the questionnaire used in my research was really crisp
and was aimed at getting the required information in the least time, also the questionnaire
was used for primary purpose only.

19
Research Design
Research has been conducted by the questionnaire and the interviews are taken at different parts
of the city of Delhi and NCR. The research has to be made and the data is analyzed as per the
information attained and then the data is made in graph format. Research design is broadly
classified into three types as:

 Exploratory Research Design

 Descriptive Research Design
 Causal Research Design

Descriptive Research Design

We are conducting a research regarding the market share of ozone products. We are measuring
the today market scenario of ozone overseas and the current usage of ozone products in the
market. The questionnaire and the interviews has to be taken into consideration the different
research areas of Delhi and NCR are taken where and in how many sites ozone products are used
and in what percentage.

SAMPLE DESIGN
A Sample Design is a definite plan for obtaining a sample from a given population. It refers to
the technique to the procedure adopted in selecting items for the sampling designs are as
below:

SAMPLE SIZE
The sample size has been taken by people . Conclusions had been arrived at using the
response of the questionnaire.

SAMPLING METHOD
In this marketing research project, I am using Random sampling method.

SAMPLE TYPE
Area Sampling, and the area of sampling is Delhi & NCR.

20
Data Collection Method

➢ Primary Data: - Primary data means data that are collected by different techniques like
questionnaire, Depth interview, Survey, Schedules etc. In this project, primary data
has been collected by the means of questionnaire.

Limitation of the Study

➢ The sample area and sample size has been limited due to time constraint.
➢ Customers(respondents) are reluctant for their feedbacks & opinions, and authenticity
of their statements can’t be verified too.
➢ All the observation and recommendation will be made on the feedback obtained from
survey.

Data Analysis

29
METHODS & TE CHNIQUES OF DATA ANALYSIS

Data Analysis Concept

Data are analysed from the raw data is ordered and organized so that useful information can be
extracted from it. The process of organizing and thinking about data is key to understanding
what the data does and does not contain. There are a variety of ways in which people can
approach data analysis ( such as by questionnaire , interviews , meetings etc. ) and it is notoriously
easy to manipulate data during the analysis phase to push certain conclusions or agendas. For
this reason, it is important to pay attention when data analysis is presented, and to think
critically about the data and the conclusions which were drawn.

Raw data can take a variety of forms, including measurements, survey responses, and
observations. In its raw form, this information can be incredibly useful, but also overwhelming.
Over the course of the data analysis process, the raw data is ordered in a way which will be
useful. For example, survey results may be tallied, so that people can see at a glance how
many people answered the survey, and how people responded to specific questions.

In the course of organizing the data, trends often emerge; modeling the data with the use of
mathematics and other tools can sometimes exaggerate such points of interest in the data,
making them easier for the researcher to see. Charts, graphs, and textual writeups of data are
all forms of data analysis. These methods are designed to refine and distill the data so that
readers can glean interesting information without needing to sort through all of the data on
their own.

30
Data Analysis process

Once the necessary data collected, the next task is to aggregate the data in a meaningful
manner. A number of tables are prepared to bring out the main characteristics of the data. The
researcher should have a well thought out framework for processing and analyzing data, and
this should be done prior to the collection.

It includes the following activities:

I. Editing
The first task in data processing is the editing. Editing is the process of examining
errors and omissions in the collected data and making necessary corrections in the
same.

II. Analyzing

Analyzing is necessary to carry out the subsequent operations of tabulating data. If

analyzing is not done, it will not be possible to reduce a large number of heterogeneous
data into meaningful categories with the result that the analysis of data would be weak
and ineffective, and without proper focus.

III.Tabulation
Data attained are now sorted and each data category area made accordingly in which
data are kept in a subsequent manner.

III. Result
After the all three above steps, the charts and the pivot summary is made available to
easily understand the consequence of the data and the market of the company easily to
attain the best piossible outcomes.

launch but it surely underlines two facts – Stability in market, Upcoming the
customer need and competition.

52
FINDINGS FROM THE RESEARCH

An important facet of research is “the analysis and positioning of available

Ozone Share in the Indian market”. Ozone has been available in Indian market
for years, but the availability share of ozone products in India solely depends
on the usage of product. Since, Ozone produces high quality goods.

In terms of the Glassage, Ozone holds monopoly in the market. But, it is essential
to study the detailed performance of available competitor product available in the
market, in Architectural Hardware category. This would determine the hardware
positioning of Ozone.

• From the research, it has been figured out that ‘Safety’ is the most
important characteristics that individual seek in a Ozone Product.
• Glassage, Doorcontrol, Ozomotion has been in the top of the list in their
hardware range of products. This creates a good market for Hardware
products, since most of the people consider it as one of the useful
product in the Hardware product category.
• Apart from this, Ozone Market Share is about 21% which is good in 10
years as compared to dorma, Haffle and Hardwyn which is running
for more than 20 years.
• While considering the distribution of O z o n e P r o d u c t s , it has been
found that Ozomotion has the market share from atmost 90-100%.
• From the above analysis nit is evident that Glassage and Ozomotion series
is the most preferred product by Ozone and also holds larger market share
than other companies.

53
CONCLUSION

The architectural hardware industry currently represents a highly competitive

environment. Architectural Hardware companies have to operate in a highly
regulated environment; the degree of regulation to a significant extent depends on
the country and type of the product. One of the most important aspects of
government regulation for architectural hardware companies is quality regulation,
and different countries have different policies on this issue. As the result of quality
control, quality of the same products can significantly differ in different countries.

Ozone Overseas has been enjoying the long run of its monotonous market in terms
of its product Glassage series. With the product, Glassage patch fittings etc. it
wouldn’t be wrong to say that company will enjoy the similar situation, if quality
being the competitive factor.

With the Ozone occupying the maximum market shares in Glassage category, it
would be easy to be replaced by other companies. Since, it is one of the 10 years of
original products.

Hence, it can be considered that the market condition and initial opinion about
the product is good as the ozone share in the market is excellent and higher as
compared to other companies in the market and leads to success in next further
years.

54
SUGGETIONS
The main challenges for architectural hardware companies come from four areas.
First, they must deal with competition from within and without. Second, they must
manage within a world of price controls that dictate a wide range of prices from place
to place. Third, companies must be constantly on guard for patent violations and
seek legal protection in new and growing global markets. Finally, they must manage
their product so that patent expirations do not leave them without protection for their
investment.

Lastly, in terms of share in the market development is essential which would help
the company in creating increased market share. For this purpose Ozone Overseas.
should focus on following:

• In Glassage, the company has to focus on shower cubical fitting as in findings

there are no shower cubical fitting found anywhere.
• Safety today are very essential, so at bank strong room door, the fingerprint of
two persons is necessary other than having a key.
• In safety lockers there is a wifi option and the android and ios app is to be built
so that in case user forget everything he have to login to the app by his
username and password and reset locker password.
• The area the company has to focus more is at Gurgaon because Gurgaon ozone
market is low and especially badshapur because new construction are happening
there..
