1- Mumps is a viral disease that infects the parotid salivary glands. There is a high fever

often to 41.1 degrees Celsius, with shaking chills, headache, nausea and vomiting. If the

fever goes above 39.4 degrees Celsius, bring it down using acetaminophen.

2- Measles, also called rubella, is best known for its typical skin rash. The first symptoms

are irritability, runny nose, eyes that are red and sensitive to light, hacking cough, and a

fever as high as 40.6 degrees. Measles is prevented by a vaccine that can be given before,
or within 3 days after exposure to the disease.

CHOLERA

Cholera is a bacterium (Vibrio cholera) that attacks the intestines, causing diarrhea in
about 5 percent of those infected. Sometimes quite severe, the diarrhea and subsequent
loss of fluids can cause people to go into shock, and die. Each year about 120,000 cases
of cholera are reported to the World Health Organization from 50 countries. The
cholera bacteria may be present in contaminated food, water or shellfish. Cholera is
common in the following countries or regions: India, Africa, Indonesia and Iran among
others.

Cholera is treated with a vaccine. Once injected into the body, the killed cholera
bacteria cause an immune response against cholera, but, because the bacteria are
killed, they don't cause the disease. Unfortunately, the cholera vaccine is only about 50
percent effective at preventing cholera in people who are exposed to the bacteria. Side
effects are generally mild and include pain or swelling in the area of the shot.
Headache, fever and fatigue also may occur.

Asthma
Shannon's classmates were staring at her. She was in the middle of a physical
education class when "it" started to happen. She started to cough and wheeze. Her
chest tightened. She felt out of breath. She froze. She needed help. The nurse was
called into the gym.

After Shannon took her medicine she felt better. However, she had
just suffered from an asthma attack in front of her friends. They
had questions. The attack had scared them.

The next day Shannon spoke with her teacher. She wanted to
explain to the class what had happened. Her teacher thought this
was an excellent idea and even invited Mrs. Riley, the school nurse, to help.

20
Shannon told her classmates she had asthma. She said about three million kids in the
United States have it.

Mrs. Riley asked the children if any of them had allergies. Some of the children raised
their hands. One was allergic to cats. They made her eyes water. Another was allergic
to pollen. It made him sneeze.
Mrs. Riley explained that when a person has an allergy, the body's immune system
tries to get rid of whatever the foreign substance is (cat, pollen, dust, etc.) by sneezing,
etc.

The Changes of Adolescence

The rapid changes of adolescence start gradually, from around eleven for girls, thirteen
for boys. Girls start these changes before boys and will, for the first three or four years,
appear to be maturing much faster. After this, boys became equal.

With the speed of these changes, some adolescents become very concerned about their
physical appearance. Also, they may need a lot of support, specially if they are not
growing or maturing as quickly as their friends.

At this age, girls have their first period and boys’ voices break. Also, boys start shaving.
All this growth and development uses a lot of energy and this may be why teenagers
often seem to need so much sleep.

TYPES OF FAMILIES

Nuclear Family

A nuclear family consists of a mother, father, and their biological or adoptive

descendants, often called the traditional family. The nuclear family was most popular in
the 1950’s and 60’s. The nuclear family can be a nurturing environment in which to raise
children as long as there is love, time spent with children, emotional support, low stress,
and a stable economic environment. In nuclear families, both adults are the biological or
adoptive parents of their children.

Single Parent Family

27
One of the most striking changes in family structure over the last twenty years has been
the increase of single parent families. In this family there is only one parent in the
household raising the children. Due to high divorce rates and adults choosing not to
marry, this is currently the fastest growing family form in North America. More than half
of all children will spend some of their lives in a single-parent family. Currently, 88
percent of these families are headed by women.

Extended Family

An extended family is two or more adults from different generations of a family, who
share a household. It consists of more than parents and children; it may be a family that
includes parents, children, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, foster children etc. The
extended family may live together for many reasons, help raise children, support for an
ill relative, or help with financial problems. Sometimes children are raised by their
grandparents when their biological parents have died or no longer can take care of them.
Many grandparents take some primary responsibility for child care, particularly when
both parents work. Extended families can be found all over the world in different
communities and countries. The number of these families has increased by 40 percent
in the past ten years. There are three types of extended families; they are one
generation, two generation and three generation families.

Childless Family

A childless family is simply a group of people from all kinds of backgrounds and all walks
of life who, for whatever reason, have never had children.

Pancakes

Also known as flapjacks, griddlecakes or hotcakes in the US, pancakes are popular
breakfast foods in the US. The first pancakes are believed to be eaten by the ancient
Romans. It was first adapted by the French from China and Nepal by crusaders in the
12th century. The Americans then took the recipe from them and began preparing them.

38
The pancakes can be prepared sweet or savory depending on the extra ingredient added
to them like fruits, bacon, cheese, etc. Let's have a look at the recipe:
Ingredients

 225 g all purpose flour

 2 eggs, beaten
 300 ml milk
 30 g butter (melted and cooled)
 1 tbs baking powder
 1 tsp sugar
 Pinch of salt

Procedure

In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt and make a well in its
center. Pour in the milk, beaten eggs, milk and melted butter in the well and mix well, till
a smooth batter like consistency is obtained. Since it's more convenient to pour the batter
onto the pan while frying it, transfer the batter into a jug. Allow the batter to sit for 20- 30
minutes before making the pancakes.

Get the pan on the burner and pour in some batter in the shape of a circle. When the
side facing you begins to bubble and blister, flip the pancake. Cook for a minute and then
serve after drizzling some glorious golden honey on it.

Typical meats for roasting are joints of beef, pork, lamb or a whole chicken.
More rarely duck, goose, gammon, turkey or game are eaten.

who works for a mere ten dollars a day in the town called
Sleepy Hollow in New York. He is a coward and very
superstitious. One night he is invited to a party, he had
borrowed a horse from a farmer. He gets into a discussion
with a group of people who are all talking about the headless
horseman and how they all had encounters with him. After
the party Ichabod is on his way home and when he is
crossing the bridge he sees him, the headless horseman. Ichabod in terror turns
his horse around and takes off in a hurry. As he is nearing the old church and
graveyard he feels some thing hits his head and he falls off. The next morning the
farmer horse had returned but there is no sign of Ichabod, they go to search for
him but all they find is his hat and a smashed pumpkin.

"La llorona" is one of the most popular legends directed towards women. During
colonial times, a pretty girl called Maria, lived in a small town by the Reventazon
river. She fell in love with a good man but he had to go off in an expedition into
the mountains, promising to marry her when
he returned. Another man called Ximeno,
who had come through the mule road from
Panama, met Maria and fell in love with her.
In a cold and rainy night, Maria's family
decided to let Ximeno stay in their home,
since he didn't have another place to go. That night, Maria gave in to Ximeno's
caresses, and became pregnant. When she gave birth, she went crazy, and

Jack and the Beanstalk (a British Tale)

Once upon a time there was a boy called Jack. He lived with his mother. There were
very poor. All they had was a cow. One morning, Jack´s mother told jack to take their
cow to the market and sell her. On the way, Jack met a man. He gave Jack some magic
beans for the cow. Jack took the beans and went back home. When Jack´s mother saw
the beans she was very angry. She threw the beans out of the window. The next
morning, Jack looked out of the window. There was a giant beanstalk. He went outside
and started to climb the beanstalk. He climbed up to the sky through the clouds. Jack
saw a beautiful castle. He went inside. Jack heard a voice “Fee, Fai, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran
into a cupboard. An enormous giant came into the room and sat down. On the table
there was a hen and a golden harp. “Lay!” said the giant. The hen laid an egg- it was
made of gold. “Sing!” said the giant. The harp began to sing. Soon the giant was asleep.
Jack jumped out of the cupboard. He took the hen and the harp. Suddenly the harp
sang, “Help, Mater!” The giant woke up, and shouted, “Fee, Fai, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran and
started climbing down the beanstalk. The giant came down after him. Jack shouted
“Mother! Help!” Jack´s mother took an axe and chopped down the beanstalk. The giant
fell and crashed down to the ground. Nobody ever saw him again. With the golden eggs
and the magic harp, Jack and his mother lived happily ever after.
