CHAPTER I
BACKROUND OF THE STUDY

Facebook have become so popular today that they are leading words on the lips of student.

Many students love to spend most of their time checking their Facebook updates and posted status,

but they didn’t know that there are many negative effects of using Facebook.

Facebook is a social media site that allows the users to create their profile and upload

pictures, and videos where they can react, comment, and share a post. Nowadays most of the

students they didn’t notice the time because they took long hours chatting with their friends or

scrolling on their newsfeed to read the updated post of their friends and they don’t realize the bad

or negative effects of Facebook in their life and in their studies. And, the main reason is because

they are already addicted to it and this addiction can lead to several negative effects.

The purpose of this study is to suggest some way to minimize the bad effects of

Facebook to the students of San Jose National High School and to show the negative effects of this

social networking site to their performance and to know the effect of using Facebook of the San

Jose National High School students to their study.

The impact of using Facebook can result bad effects to their study. Because of too

much using it they cannot do their home works in school instead they are focusing in using

Facebook that will lead them to have low or failed grades. They used to sleep late at night when

they are chatting with their friends that’s why they feel sleepy in the school and they cannot

concentrate on their subjects. Sometimes it’s a distraction to them because it causes the students

to have shorter attention to their study. According to a research by Rather (2013) found that the

over use of Facebook leads to lowering of the academic grades.

The ways that can’t affect Facebook to their studies is by creating activity involve

using Facebook to their study is by creating activity involve using Facebook for them to used it

for academic purposes. According to Hines (2011) Facebook can help students learn better and

help each other by doing collaborative studies through group chats and messaging. This allows

students to share ideas and help another to ensure a high Grades.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Facebook has been one of the most used social networking flat form in the world.

Facebook is a social media site that make it easy for everyone to connect and share with family

and friends online. This study is searching for the ways that may Facebook can be helpful or useful

application for the Students learnings.

Generally, this study aims to identify the effects of Facebook usage to the study of San

Jose National High School Students.

Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What are the ways to minimize their time using Facebook?

2. What are the effects of Facebook usage on the grades of students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the students and the effects of using

Facebook?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study was conducted at San Jose National High School located in Bagong Sikat, San

Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

The respondents of this study are the four sections from the selected grade 11 senior high

school students among the three strands, which are HUMSS- Faith, HUMSS- Prudence, ABM-

Integrity and STEM- Analytical. Each section has chosen 10 students to answer the study

This Study is concerned about the effects of Facebook usage to the study of San Jose

National High School students and focused on the ways that Facebook can be a help or useful for

the Students learnings.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In academic world, everyone viewed social media like Facebook as a distraction and lead

the students to procrastination in their academics. On the other Hand it will also gives benefits to

those who are using Facebook.

The beneficiaries of this study are the teachers and students. The benefits of this study are

it serves as communication because students are used and accessed it daily so that it can be an easy

way to be in touch with their teachers. They can express their ideas through sending message in a

group chat so that they can receive information.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social networking sites let individual to present themselves and begin or keep

connections with others. Facebook has already printed a big impact on their lives. This site can be

used towards work related contexts, romantic relationship, commencement and connecting those

common interest. Facebook permits its user to present themselves in an internet profile, build up

“friends” who can post comments on each other wall.

According to O’Keeffe and Clarke-Pearson, in the American Academy of Pediatries, there

are couple of benefits to social media use. They believe one of the most important benefits of it is

that it enhances how an individual understands himself by engaging with others, and becoming

creative through blogging. This leads to better outcomes in their individual school work. Another

important benefit is the fact that using social media gives students the opportunity to improve their

learning, since they have a chance to share knowledge with one another and conduct group projects

more efficiently (O’Keefe and Clarke-Pearson, 2011).

Facebook can be used by students to communicate with their classmates about their courses.

Lampe, Wohn, Vitak, Ellison, and Wash (2011) note the potential for Students to collaborate on

Facebook in order to “reduce ambiguity” in a class. In other word to seek clarification on

assignments and class expectation.

Facebook resulted in a significant improvement in student performance in universities.

A study in a Vietnamese University concluded that students using Facebook as a social media has

improved sustainability with respect to their grades (Tuan & Tu, 2013). The same argument

relating to social absorption by student is reached by Gafni and Deri (2012), where they

emphasized the role of social networks in socializing students opening channels for finding more

academic resources, thus improving their academic achievement.

On the other Hand social networking sites like Facebook have a lot of uses and couple of

benefits to people. Even if you don’t meet that person you can collaborate or communicate with

them and you can seek clarification on your assignments and requirements in the school through

the use of it. Social media is extremely helpful because it gives the students an opportunity to

improve their learnings but there are still some negative point that can encounter while using it.

In contrast, Sanzhar Naizabekov concluded that social media causes procrastination as a

result of its distracting nature. It would take an individual who uses social media much more time

than it would take a focused individual to finish a task. Through procrastination emerges the second

negative impact, which is lack of motivation because using social media with studying develops

negative attitude towards their individual work at school (Naizabekov, 2012).

In addition, Paul, Baker Cochran (2012) wrote an article named effect of online social

networking on student academic performance. The researchers result revealed a statistically

significant negative relationship between time spent by students on online social networking and

their academic performance. As time spent on social networking sites increases, the academic

performance of the students ate seen to deteriorate.

Despite of the benefits that social media gives to the students it is also have negative

effects to their study. It can cause procrastination to the students because they spend too much time

in using Facebook so that their academic performance seen to deteriorate.

The said effects of using Facebook are depending on the person involved. Though some

people still makes the best of it but they can’t still forget the negative side. They should ask

themselves on what is their current position in the social networking world. Technology helps to

make life easier and better but they must be sure that they should treat it with moderation.

According to the website of social media today it is states that there are positive and

negative points of social media but it doesn’t explain that it is good or bad thing. It stands

somewhere in between. And according to the website of social media impacts on society it is your

choice to either use social media in positive way and benefit from it in your social and academic

life, or fall as victim of social medias negative impacts.

Facebook has a large impact to people some students are using it for educational purposes,

they get to know the latest news, participate online discussions and collaborate, perform task

(projects, assignments). Few of the side effects of Facebook can affected on a student’s behavior

and academic performance it also has an effect on student’s emotional health

The figure1 shows the conceptual framework of the study ascertaining the interrelationship

between the two variables. The above shown the paradigm points out the independent variable of

the study which is Facebook usage that affects the dependent variable which is study of San Jose

National High School Students.

NULL HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant relationship between the Facebook usage and the study of San Jose

National High School Students.
