Trash Can Ball

Teacher: Patrick Holman Grade(s): 4-6

NASPE Content Standard(s) targeted: 1 – Motor Skills: Passing, shooting, tossing, sprinting
2 – Strategizes when to use various skills in game setting
3 – Student demonstrates physical exertion getting their heart rate up
4 – Always shows good sportsmanship respecting self and others
5 – Can use both tic-tac-toe and Trash Can Ball to increase fitness and has a great time doing so!

Lesson Objectives (Explicit, observable): By the end of the lesson students will be able to shoot the
gator ball into the trashcan with correct form, will be able to collect poly spots before retrieving their
gator ball out of the trash can, will be able to strategize in a game of tic-tac-toe on how to beat the
opponent if not with speed with skill (or vice-versa).

Organization – Student (individual, partners, 3's, groups of?): Groups of 4 for both games for 80
students (there might be some groups of 5)

Formal Assessment/Evidence of Mastery (Include a variety of methods of checking for

understanding & creating a record of student performance): Students will be able to shoot the gator
ball into the trashcan with correct form, will be able to collect poly spots before retrieving their gator
ball out of the trash can, will be able to strategize in a game of tic-tac-toe on how to beat the
opponent if not with speed with skill (or vice-versa).

Key vocabulary targeted: (CCR) Needed equipment and Set-up:

boundary lines, poly spot, gator ball, tic-tac-toe, 80 poly spots for tic-tac-toe (spread same poly
heart rate spots out for Trash Can Ball), 6 trash cans spread
out, 20 gator balls, 20 hula hoops, 60 bean bags

CONTENT SEQUENCE:
Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real
life) With the NBA playoffs amongst us, I felt as if it would only be necessary to introduce a new
game to you that challenges your basketball skills that we have already worked on during March
Madness!

Warm-up/Fitness segment: Tic-Tac-Toe Cardio

Board games come to life with Tic-Tac-Toe Cardio! Laid out will be 9 poly spots (or hula hoops)
representing a real-life tic-tac-toe board. About 20 feet away will be 3 beanbags laid down for each
team. As students come in, they will line up behind the bean bags in groups. This game is a relay race
that requires not just skill but thinking as well. The object of the game is the same as the paper game
played world-wide; to get three in a row! One team’s bean bags represent the “X’s” and the other’s
represents the “O’s.” The first person will go from each team and place their beanbag on top of a
poly spot and when they run back to their partner that is ready to take off, they must give them a
high-five for them to go. High-fives are continued with students switching until one team gets the
three in a row. Once teams run out of their 3 bean bags, all they are to do is move the bean bags from
one poly spot to a more appropriate poly spot to put their team in a better position to win the game.
Play a couple rounds and the kids’ heart rates will raise the roof!

Check student heart-rate afterwards. In between 130-170 BPM?

Skill Development/Game content - Include Critical Elements, Teaching Cues, and Common Errors
you will likely need to address: Trash Can Ball
Students will be divided into teams and line up behind each hula hoop. A plethora of poly spots are
placed all around the trash can (bucket for younger levels).

Skill Development: Students will practice shooting their gator balls using the flick of their wrist
learned in prior lessons into the trash cans placed around the hula hoops. After they take one turn
shooting (miss or make), they will retrieve the ball and softly pass it to their teammates once they are
close to them who will then take a shot and the trend continues.

Game: When I say “go,” the first person of each team will run to a poly spot of their choice
(hopefully the one closest to the trash can) and shoot at the can. If they make it, they get to take that
poly spot and bring it back to their hula hoop as a point and can then go retrieve the gator ball from
the trash can to bring to the next person in their team’s line.

*Emphasize that students must pick up their poly spot if they make it because if they do not and
someone else goes to that poly spot and makes it, they then can “steal” the poly spot from the student
who initially made it!*

Once all poly spots are placed in hula hoops, we will count the total score per team.

Safety: When running in Tic-Tac-Toe, students are to run in straight lines to avoid running into
others.
Students are to have spatial awareness at all times so that they do not run into others especially when
going to a poly spot. If someone is on that poly spot they are to either find a new one or wait until the
person is off that one.

Modifications for students with disabilities: Kamrin, Brandon, and Sarah will be able to take their
time but can place the bean bag on a specific poly spot. They should be set up in different teams.
They can also take a shot with the gator ball into the trash can. They will need to be reminded when
their turn to go by their teammates to be successful.

Feedback Statements: (specific positive and corrective)

I really like that you are able to quickly move that beanbag to that spot, Draven. You guys might win
with this setup!
Awesome work shooting the gator ball with a flick of your wrist, Omar. Next time you make it; don’t
forget to grab the poly spot though before you run to retrieve the ball!

Closure/Lesson Summary:
Alright, guys take a knee right where you are! I really liked the way that we were able to get through
two different fun games today. What are some strategies that you guys had for our first game, “Tic-
Tac-Toe?” Any strategies for “Trash Can Ball?”

Lesson Extension:
Today we played a modification of basketball and used a trash can in place of a basketball hoop. Not
getting up or moving around, please discuss with one partner a way that you can A. Use something
other than a trash can at home to play the game we just tried? B. Use something in place of a gator
ball if you don’t have access to one of these at home?

Raising your hand give me some ideas of what you guys discussed!

With the modified equipment stated, do you feel comfortable enough about the rules that you could
play this game at the park with a few friends?
