Several reputed institutes to participate in debate tournament

BANGALORE: The 2nd edition of the Dr. MS Ramaiah Memorial Debate Tournament in which
several reputed institutions of the country will participate will be held here, from the 9th to
11th of this month.

It will be organized by the Literary and Debating Society a student run body of, MS Ramaiah
Institute of Technology (MSRIT), Bangalore, which made the announcement regarding the
event on Thursday. The tournament will take place within the premises of the institute.

Announcing the same, Kumar Sheshank and Tauseef Ahmed, the student conveners from
MSRIT said, “This year’s edition is bigger and better and would be in the nature of a
Parliamentary Debate, with participation from reputed institutions like National Law School
of India University, Bangalore, Symbiosis, Pune, IIT Bombay, RV College of Engineering,
BMS Engineering College, Christ University, Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad,
Vellore Institute of Technology, National University of Jurisdictional Sciences, Kolkata, to
name a few”.

Parliamentary debating (PD) is a debate between two 3-member teams one of which acts
like the Government and forms or proposes the motion while the other plays the role of the
Opposition. The speaking order alternates one member from each side, speaking for seven
minutes each, which allows for a more complete and matter-oriented debate, in spite of the
fact that they are given only 20-25 minutes after the release of the topic to prepare.

The topic or “motion” is usually a statement of political nature (eg, "This House Believes
That TV news channels must be censored"). The result of the debate is decided by a panel
of neutral adjudicators taken largely from students of the institutions that participate. This,
beyond anything else, is the most innovative aspect of parliamentary debating, since,
peer-judged debates carry special importance.
