A Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) is responsible for the delivery of data packets from and
to the mobile stations within its geographical service area. Its tasks include packet routing and transfer,
mobility management (attach/detach and location management), logical link management, and
authentication and charging functions. The location register of the SGSN stores location information (e.g.,
current cell, current VLR) and user profiles (e.g., IMSI, addresses) used in the packet data network) of all
GPRS users registered with this SGSN.

The Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi NS - SGSN is based on modular software and hardware
architecture, which enables integrating the 3G functionality to complement the existing 2G functionality.
With modular architecture, it is possible to utilize common parts that are present both in 2G and 3G
SGSN. NSN SGSN is available in two hardware platforms (DX200 and ATCA).

Responsibilities :
a) Responsible for NSN SGSN testing of GPRS/UMTS end to end.
b) Involved in Functionality, System Integration, Regression, Compatibility,
Installation, sanity, GUI testing and Gb/Gn/Iu/Gr/Gs interface testing.
c) In functional testing we have to check Packet call flow, resource allocation
and basic GPRS/EGPRS functionality.
d) Involved in Basic regression testing to check GPRS/EGPRS functionality of
SGSN.
e) Testing release upgrade macro with new software releases and also
upgrading to new software release manually.
f) Testing Multi CD installation macro with new CD and also adding new CD
with manual instructions.
g) Was involved in KPI (Key Performance Indicator) real test bed for observing
performance of PAPU in Full load conditions to be able to compare it with
real network.
h) Creation of END to END setup for testing Packet call.
i) Create load/emulator/real setup as per testing requirement. Creation of load
setup includes end to end network elements i.e. ms (emulated) BSS
(real/emulated), RNC (emulated), and GGSN (real). It also includes
generation of traffic model based on test case.
j) Tracking Defects and Reporting of Bugs on analysis of logs.(Called pronto in
NSN terms)
k) Interaction with Development team for making understanding of reported
problems.
l) Also have experience on configuring ESB switches and A-Hubs.
Up gradation of SGSN units with new plug-in units and testing the
hardware.
m) Operation & Maintenance of SGSN, GGSN, BSC, BTS’s, Node-B, E Node-
B, LIG.
n) Installation and commissioning of SGSN, GGSN, BSC, BTS’s, Node-B, E
Node-B, LIG.
o) Making the emulators setup which includes installation of Linux
(RHEL/FEDORA) in the server though PXE boot.
p) Setting up and troubleshooting DHCP server, DNS server, virtual machines
(Xen), Virtual ATCA server and GEMU.
