Manhole

the top ring and manhole cover (not

A manhole (alternatively utility hole, cable chamber, maintenance hole, inspection chamber, access
chamber, sewer hole, or confined space) is the top opening to an underground utility vault used to house an
access point for making connections, inspection, valve adjustments or performing maintenance on underground
and buried public utility and other services including water, sewers, telephone, electricity, storm drains, district
heating and gas.
Manholes are masonry or RCC chambers constructed at suitable intervals along the sewer lines
for providing access into them.
Purposes of Manhole Location of Manhole
1. They are used to carry out inspection, cleaning and 5. Manhole is provided when
removing obstruction in the sewer line. 6. There is change in grade of sewer
2. Manhole allows joining of sewers or changing the 7. There is change in alignment
direction of sewer or alignment of sewer or both. 8. There is change in size of sewer
3. They allow the escape of considerable gases through 9. At junction of two or more sewers
perforated cover and thus help in ventilation of
sewage.
4. They facilitate the laying of sewer line in convenient
lengths.
Manhole is also provided in straight alignment of sewers at regular intervals depending upon the diameters of
sewers. It ranges from 90m to 150m (300' – 500') e.g. 75m for 60cmф, 120m for 90cmф and 150m for 120cmф.

Types of Manhole

1. Shallow manhole 2. Normal Manhole 3. Deep Manhole

Composite manhole

Composite (fiberglass) manholes are commonly used in applications where infiltration, exfiltration, or corrosion
by hydrogen sulfide (from sewer gas) are a concern, or where structures need to be factory integrated into a
manhole before placement.

Structures commonly integrated into composite Occasionally, composite manholes will integrate:
manholes include:
 Flow inverts  Weirs
 Flumes  Storm water screening structures
 Drop structures from higher elevation flows to  Sewage grinders
lower elevation discharge pipes  Energy absorbing structures to dissipate
undesirable flow stream turbulence or velocity
Catchpits
Catchpits are a precast concrete drainage product that are recommended for use as
a filter and collector in land drainage systems that do not make use of any sort of
geo-membrane.
A Catchpit is essentially an empty chamber with an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe set
at a level above the floor of the pit. Any sediment carried by the system settles out
whilst in the Catch-Pit, from where it can be periodically pumped out or removed.
Instead of building a Catchpit consider buying a Tracey Concrete Catchpit saving
yourself time and money.

Tracey Concrete Catchpits effectively provide a sealed sump manhole fitted with connector seals which can be used
to connect to the following types of pipe:Tracey Concrete, uPVC, Twinwall, Clay &Ductile Iron
Tracey Concrete manufacture 1050DN & 1200DNCatchpit in accordance with BSEN 1917 & BS5911. Tracey
Concrete Catchpits can be fitted with manhole rungs and have an invert level of 300mm for inlet and outlet pipes. Non
standard invert levels are available on request. Tracey Concrete manhole rings may be placed directly on top of the
catchpits & constructed as normal.

Benefits
 Greatly reduced installation time on site
 Reduced installation costs
 Quality is greatly increased as construction is within the factory environment
 Eliminated material wastage associated with in-situ method
 Creates an immediate watertight structure
 Accomodated connection to all types of pipes used in construction
