Challenge Description

The Design Challenge competition will have four unique challenges and the teams are expected to choose
one challenge from the list of four. Assessment of the teams will be on the basis of creativity & design
proficiency using materials manufactured by Everest Industries:

Challenge 1 – The Green Gospel

A builder in NCR is planning to construct an upcoming shopping Mall where he wants to use Dry
construction technique and have an efficient air conditioning in his premises in order to have energy
savings. The delivery had to be made in 2 yrs and 6 months whereas the project has got delayed and
the builder has got only 7.5 months left now to finish the project. In addition the building needs to be
LEED & GRIHA rated from the govt. Other requirements include that the building needs to be fire
rated for 2 hrs at least with 40dB of sound insulation in order to shield the adjoining residential areas
from music & noise generated from the activities inside the mall.

Green Buildings - Any building that makes optimum use of natural resources throughout its life from
planning, design, construction, and occupancy to its decommissioning is called a Green Building.
Green Buildings imbibe resource-efficient designs, which are sustainable. It has an overall positive
impact on the ecosystem. For example, from taking care of the well-being of the construction
workers to making sure that the construction material has

 Maximum re-usability
 Material available in close proximity
 Materials that use dry construction techniques with zero water usage
 Low operating & maintenance cost
 Light Weight- Saves Structural cost & reduces earth excavation cost
 Improved occupant comfort & economical

According to research, buildings account for 18 % of total CO2 emissions. If construction keeps
growing at the present rate, the emissions will double by 2050

Some of the key Green building accumulation points are as per the details below

Norm Criteria Point Range Accrued

Minimum Energy Performance 1
Construction Waste Management 1-2
LEED Resource Reuse 1-2

Challenge 2 – Quake Proof Clinic

A new age hospital building is to be constructed in a seismic zone in Bhuj District of Gujarat. There
four problems which need to be taken care of while designing the building viz.

1. Adherence to Group C building code (Refer to Govt. of India site for building codes)
2. A high heat insulation is required since the building would be air conditioned and the
temperatures in Bhuj run as high as 45 Degree Celsius
3. Due to dry and arid conditions the possibility of an outbreak of fire is comparatively higher
so a fire resistant exterior & interiors are required with a good fire rating
