QUESTION 1 (Compulsory – 40 Marks)
Shumba Pvt. Ltd. faced a difficulty of retaining new employees. Employees would join
the organisation, get trained, work for a while, become valuable employees, then leave
the company. Management asked the line-supervisors why the employees were leaving.
The line managers were not very sure, however they provided possible and varied
reasons (salaries were not competitive, housing in the area was expensive and difficult
to find, poor working conditions, lack of management support and limited career
prospects). Given your expertise as a researcher, you are requested by management of
Shumba Pvt. Ltd. to assist in establishing the causes of employee turnover.
Required:
Prepare a business research proposal to help management of Shumba Pvt Ltd better
understand the underlying causes of employee turnover. (40 marks)
QUESTION 2
(a) You intend to investigate the factors influencing the high failure rate of SMEs in
Zimbabwe. Explain how you would use the hallmarks of scientific research to
ensure that your study is scientific. (16 marks)
(b) With the aid of examples, explain the four measurement scales of data in
research. (4 marks)
QUESTION 3
‘Negotiating access and addressing ethical issues are critical aspects for the conduct of
research’. Using practical examples critically analyse this statement. (20 marks)
QUESTION 4
A stratified sample of 500 grocery customers is to be taken from a population of size of
12 000 which comprises 4 strata, Pick & Pay customers = 3000, OK customers = 5000,
Food Chain customers = 500 and Spar Supermarket customers = 3500.
(b) You intend to investigate what motivates a population of 3000 bank middle
managers at work. Determine a suitable sample size. (2 marks)
(c) Critique the effectiveness of qualitative sampling methods in research. (14 marks)

(a) Suggest the research approach that was employed for this study. Justify your
answer. (3 marks)
(b) Explain why the adjusted R-squared and the standardized Beta coefficients are
preferred to the R-squared and unstandardized Beta coefficients respectively in the
regression formula. (4 marks)
(c) Interpret the relationship between each predictor variable and the dependent
variable. (6 marks)
(d) Provide recommendations for management decision making in light of the results
shown in Table 1 above. (5 marks)
