Wumps

Zach and Marta have a computer game that involves the Wump family. The Wumps are various sizes, but they
all have the same shape. Mug is the game’s main character, and can be transformed into other Wump family
members using mathematical rules.
1. Making Similar Figures
a. Draw Mug on the coordinate graph; refer to the “Mug Wump” column in the table. Connect the
points in order, and pick up your pencil to start new when it tells you to.
b. Draw Zug, Lug, Bug, Glug and Jug. Use the rule at the top of each column to find the new
coordinates and complete the table.
Mug Wump Zug Lug Bug Glug Jug
Rule (x, y) (2x, 2y) (3x, y) (3x, 3y) (x, 3y) (2.5x, 2.5y)

Describe each Wump family member as either similar or not similar to Mug. If they are similar, identify the
scale factor between Mug and them.

Zach and Marta want to experiment with the coordinates by adding, subtracting, and even multiplying them by
fractions and decimals. Instead of experimenting with Mug’s body, Zach and Marta use Mug’s hat.

2. Changing Size and Location

a. Look at the rules for Hats 1-5 in the table.

b. Using the rules, complete the table. Plot each new hat on the graphs that follow; connect the
points.

Mug’s Hat Hat 1 Hat 2 Hat 3 Hat 4 Hat 5

Rule (x, y) (x+2, y+3) (x-1, y+4) (x+2, 3y) (0.5x, 0.5y) (2x, 3y)

B (9, 1)
C (6, 2)
D (6, 3)
E (4, 3)
F (4, 2)
G (1, 1)

How did each rule change Mug’s hat? (Describe the transformation in detail using mathematical terms.)

Zach and Marta decide to include a mouth and nose for Mug. They are trying to decide exactly how to
place the mouth and nose on the coordinate grid to make it look the best.

3. Changing Orientation
a. The table gives the key coordinates for drawing the mouth and nose of Mug. It also gives rules
for finding the corresponding points for other orientations.

b. Graph Mug’s mouth and nose and the others to see which one would look the best. Make sure to
connect the points.

4. In Conclusion ~ Write rules that will make hats similar to Mug’s in the following ways.
