Philosophical Views of Music Education

Philosophy is a way of thinking about the world, the universe, and society. It works
by asking very basic questions about the nature of human thought, the nature of the
universe, and the connections between them. The ideas in philosophy are often
general and abstract.

Philosophy “Philos” for love and “Sophos” for wisodm=Love of wisdom

“A philosophy of music education refers to the value of music, the value of teaching
music, and how to practically utilize those values in the music classroom.”

-Mary Elizabeth Barba

Approaches of Music Education

Referentialism=communicates meanings which in some way refer to the

extramusical world of concepts, actions, emotional states, and character.

 Music has value beacuse it refers to a specific non-artistic idea
-reveals emotions of the artists
-tells a specific story
 Music has value beacause of what it represents

“It communicates meanings which in some way refer to the extramusical world of
concepts, actions, emotional states, and character.”
-Dan Jacob Wallace

Expressionism

 An art and cultural movement of the 20th century. Expressionist artists try to
express a feeling with what they create. Melody and harmony are not used in a
way people hear them, but as the artist feels them.
 Heavily inspired by Symbolist current in the 19th century art
 Its primary intention is the expression of feelings or spirit.
 It gives an artist permission to distort sound or even dispense with sound
altogether, in order to better convey emotions or spirit.
 Expressionist music often features:
-A high level of dissonance
-Extreme contrasts of dynamics
-Constantly changing textures
-‘Distorted’ melodies and harmonies
-Angular melodies with wide leaps
 An expressionist piece portrays what is going on inside the composer’s mind and
consists of a whole orchestra range of instruments
