Course Description
This is an upper intermediate B1+ to B2 undergraduate level course that focuses on developing
students’academic and test taking skills for IELTS. This program prepares participants for all
parts of the IELTS exam – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking modules. It focuses on the
skills and techniques which are required to sit the test and assists students to familiarize
themselves with the various test formats and directions. It familiarizes them with the types of
questions that are tested in each section and identifies the ablitities of each student and provides
tips to enhance their learning potential.. Undergraduates will practice different language tasks
through a variety of academic orientated activities and assignments aimed at Freshman year
students.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

- Be prepared for the examination using techniques and academic strategies specific to IELTS by
providing a step by step approach through practice tests and text book activities.
-Develop academic skills for the purpose of reading and listening in a limited time frame.
-Generate complex information for academic writing and meeting a specific word count.
- Speak fluently and express ideas naturally by continual speaking practice on familiar and unfamiliar
subjects..
- Producing precise and accurate grammar through activities focused on IELTS question format
- Increase academic and general vocabulary by using academic skills such as paraphrasing.
- Provide complete IELTS practice tests with elaboration

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students should be able to successfully engage in the following tasks:
- Reading: - Extract information from academic reading passages and answer 15 (or more)
different types of 40 IELTS questions in one hour.
- Writing: - Interpret and summarize visual and graphical information in an academic context.
Describe, compare and contrast such information in an allocated time limit and specific word
count.
- To develop a discursive essay on a specific topic, giving two opposing views and providing
reasons and supporting evidence from an academic stand point.
- Speaking: - Participate in a speaking test consisting of an interview, a description of a familiar
topic and a two-way discussion on an unfamilar topic. (10 – 15 minutes).
- Listening: - Extract relevant information from audio passages and answer 16 (or more) different
types of 40 IELTS questions which includes spelling in limited time period.

Attendance Policy
Students are expected to attend all classes. An excuse of absence is required for a student who
does not attend classes due to personal or medical reasons. At UPM, the attendance policy will
be applied as follows:

1. If the student unexcused absences exceed 15 hours, the student will get their FIRST
WARNING.

2. If the student unexcused absences exceed 23 hours, the student will get their SECOND
WARNING.

3. If the student unexcused absences exceed 39 hours, the student will get a DN (DENIAL). A
DN student will not be allowed to attend the final exam and will get a final DN grade in the
course.

4. A student who arrives 10 minutes after the class has commenced will be considered late.
While a student who arrives to class after 10 minutes will be marked absent and not allowed to
attend the class.
Excused Absences
Hospital excuses are firstly approved from Student Affairs and then by the PYP Department.
Plagiarism
Students must write each material on their own. No copy paste will be allowed. Also, proper
reference to online texts must be made.
Late Work
Late submission of assignments is allowed but with a penalty of 10% reduction, only if
submission is made one week after the due date and 20% if the submission is made during the
second week after the due date).

Electronic Device Policy


Students should maintain a calm and disciplined environment during classes. Electronic devices
like mobile phones and laptops are not allowed during classes and exams.

Academic Integrity
To maintain a culture of academic integrity, members of the Prince Mugrin University are
expected to promote honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.
