EMS - Electromagnetic Stirrer

The electromagnetic stirrers are mainly used in the continuous casting to improve the
product quality and increase the steel production. There are three possible stirrer applications,
according to the position and required effects on cast product:
—— M-EMS (Mould Electromagnetic Stirrers);
—— S-EMS (Strand Electromagnetic Stirrers);
—— F-EMS (Final Electromagnetic Stirrers).
The rotational electromagnetic stirrer is equivalent to an asynchronous motor stator.
It is generally supplied by a three-phase or sometimes two-phase frequency converter. A
rotating magnetic field is generated, whose variation inside the steel produces eddy currents
that, interacting with the magnetic field, generate a force (Lorentz force). The final result is the
occurrence of a torque that induce the steel rotation.
The generated torque depends on the following factors:
—— intensity of the supply current;
—— number of windings forming a coil;
—— frequency;
—— system geometry.
These parameters change depending on the stirrer type M-EMS, S-EMS or F-EMS. To establish
the stirrer design, sizes, position, etc, it is important to evaluate case by case the Continues
Casting Machine data, the steel grades and the casting parameters.
The benefits obtained using one or more EMS in combination are summarized in the table below.

The design is made through the use of FEM techniques that allow to optimize the product in
accordance with the client’s specific requests.
The design activity is finalized to achieve the following objectives:
—— to ensure the optimal magneto-hydrodynamic efficiency;
—— to ensure an optimal stirrer cooling;
—— to ensure appropriate sizing of all components to avoid to withstand any temporary overload
conditions.
Regarding the stirrer cooling, this is designed to operate with low water pressure. The
internal water circuit is projected to guarantee a well-balanced cooling for an optimal
heat distribution. This prevents areas with excessive accumulation of heat. The cooling is
designed to have the lowest difference of the temperature into the stirrer to avoid dilatations
or expansions and internal cracks. The water cooling flows from bottom to top to avoid the
rubbing of any residual micro-particles with the coils and to guarantee a long stirrer lifespan.
It is also important to define the stirrer position into the mould and/or along the CCM. Ergolines
has developed some software programs which calculates the steel cooling and solidification
along the CCM to establish the right position of electromagnetic stirrers.
