Gifted and Talented Program

Product Abstract
Each student in the Independent Research or Mentor Program must carry out an authentic
advanced research project or creative production, presenting to a professional audience, which is
capable of evaluating the quality, authenticity, and novelty. The following information, provided by the
student, provides an overview of the proposed project as it is currently planned.

Student: Andrew Qian Date: June 3, 2019

Research Title: The Neurological Impact of PGE2 Signaling After Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Purpose: Examine signaling pathways controlled by prostaglandin E2 receptors through an analysis of

the both existing data and data collected on mice at JHU. Determine which signals are essential for
neuronal protection and recovery. Utilize the information gathered to produce a final written product
describing the results of the data collection.

Expected Product or Outcome: Analysis of the data collected in collected studies experiments
conducted will be organized into a detailed paper. This paper will be submitted to the National High
School Journal of Science. Additionally, a web page will be created in order to organize and display the
cumulative progress that was made throughout this research process.

Novelty of Product: Traumatic Brain Injury is a life-threatening condition that affects over a million
people per year. Through the development of an effective treatment that can minimize the deterioration
that victims of TBI face, it can greatly benefit the health of many people throughout the United States.

Audience: The final product of this research will be published in academic articles share to experts in the
field of critical care neuroscience. A lay review was published sharing the results of an academic article,
and an abstract was submitted to a neuroscience conference.

Process or Method:
1. Read through multiple scientific journals to gain a better understanding of what astrocytes and ephrins
are, and how they cooperate within the brain.
2. Conduct multiple experiments to analyze the efficacy of testing on various therapeutic targets.
4. Organize the data that has been collected within the studies in manner that allows for effective
comparison and analysis.
5. Incorporate data into a literature review which contains an abstract, introduction, background, data,
analysis, and a conclusion.
6. Begin building a web page which details the research process of this school year.
7. Submit abstract to the Society for Neuroscience conference in october.
